While milk price to dairy farmers is reported in terms of dollars per hundredweights shipped, the milk check to the farmer is based on the milk components of butterfat, protein and other solids. Therefore, increasing milk components is one strategy to bolster the milk check. This requires understanding factors that affect milk component percentages.
