After World War I, Tulsa gained fame throughout the country for the wealthy African American neighborhood known as the Greenwood District. This booming commercial corridor and the neighborhood it surrounded were dubbed "Black Wall Street." A sequence of incidents in June 1921 came very close to destroying the whole Greenwood region.
