Julie Christensen is an author, speaker, psychotherapist, founder of Leverage U. Julie wants people to have more open communication in order to establish connection so we can show more empathy with others. Starting this at an early age is an important piece of how the next generation can be more equipped to manage their expectations of life and of others.
Julie also says that anger by itself is not bad, and in fact, it is anger that helps motivate us to change. Her perspective is unique as she is in a interracial marriage and have extended family that are racially mixed, which has impacted her greatly.
She says that she has experienced racism her whole life and had a candid conversation about the Black Lives Matter movement from the lens of how pain and anger underlies a systemic problem. The death of George Floyd sparked outrage because people feel anger and fear due to a system that continues to be unjust. This scenario, like Rodney King, Sandra, Bland and many others makes her sad and tired. She also says that equality and fairness are two different things, and we need to make changes in our attitudes that will help create a shift on a larger scale long term. It’s the system that is set up to disadvantage marginalized groups, and this needs to change.
Being more consciously aware before we make comments that might be offensive and considering our intent could help people connect on a deeper level.
Ultimately, the message is that we need to build relationships. When that happens, we can see each other for who we really are, and the attitude towards being human will take on more value over skin color.
