On today's episode of Yours Mentally we talk about the men’s enmeshment with their mothers in the South Asian context. This episode is in conversation with Omar Tauseef who is a Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor.

TW: Mention of physical and emotional abuse

We begin the episode by asking Omar the difference between an emotionally connected family and an enmeshed family.
We then ask how in south asian families, it is often seen that the mother is closely enmeshed with her son. Why is this dynamic specifically seen in south Asian families particularly between these two people? Is it an implication of the Oedipus complex introduced by Sigmund Freud?
We also ask what are some signs of an enmeshed family?
We talk about how does this mother-son dynamic impact other people in the family? How does it differ among joint and nuclear families?
We ask Omar whether this enmeshment have more positive or negative outcomes? Why?
We also discuss how with changing times, people are preferring a  nuclear family setting to a joint family one. So we ask how has this impacted the various dynamics? We then ask what is enmeshment trauma? Is it a mental illness? What are its causes?
We also ask why is enmeshment trauma seen more in south asian families?
Lastly, we ask Omar what are some ways of breaking or reversing an unhealthily enmeshed relationship?
