November 11th, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set up as a United States legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918.  An Act approved on May 13, 1938 made the 11th of November a day dedicated to the cause of world peace and to honor the veterans of WWI.  The Act was amended in 1954 and Armistice Day was changed to Veteran's Day to honor all American Veterans of all wars.
