# 001 Episode Why I Started Your Outside Mindset Podcast

I started this podcast for two reasons. Because I help people recognize that going outside is not just a nice thing to do -- it could save your life.

I want to give you practical tips so you can live longer, prevent dementia, and control your chronic illness.

So if this sounds useful to you -- welcome home.

Who Am I?

I  am your host Verla Fortier, a retired nursing professor who at 63, was diagnosed with serious systemic lupus. After that I stayed inside my house getting sicker and sicker. I felt like a prisoner in a cell. When I finally decide to go outside, I felt amazing!

After that I continued to go outside and devoured the research on trees and green space. I found that sciencists across the globe in so many disciplines were unearthing amazing information that helped me to feel better than ever. I knew this information could help others who needed it too -- so I wrote the book and workbook called Take Back Your Outside Mindset: Live Longer, Prevent Dementia, and Control Your Chronic Illness.

In Episode 002 My Story/Green Space Science on Taking Back Your Outside Mindset.

What's coming?

I am going to shine a light on aging adults who may have a chronic illness and can give us practical tips on how we can get the most out of our time spent looking outside or going outside close to trees, grass, shrubs, and plants. This will include green space scientists, forest bathing experts, gardeners, natural navigators and everything in between. If you want to live longer, prevent dementia, and control your chronic illness in fun, easy, and free ways by looking and going outside --then you will love this podcast.

What Can You Do Right Now To Get Started On Taking Back Your Outside Mindset

You can look or go outside near trees. If you have no trees look up at the sky. Notice how you feel before and after you do this. Professor Mitchell at University of Glasgow showed that after 3 minutes outside our self esteem lifts. Notice if you feel better about yourself  and your world around you. This is social psychologist Ellen Langer's definition of mindset. I am simply  adding the Outside to create Your Outside Mindset -- your feeling of wellbeing that happens almost instantly when you look or go outside.
