Tip  #1

Be genuine rather than self-serving.

When reaching out to Influencers who might help you become a “bestselling author,” Derek says take your self-interest out of the equation.

Your entire attitude and approach should be ‘how is this going to help you and your audience?' It's all about them.

Derek learned this from Dale Carnegie’s book How to Win Friends and Influence People.  Readers and influencers crave genuine attention.

“A genuine compliment will instantly make you stand out. You'd probably be in the top 5% of people if you just take the time to personalize the message or send a short video introduction.

Tip #2

Write a book on a topic you know and feel passionate about sharing.

Your attitude can be: “if it makes money or not, great. Either way, I’m going to put this book into the world because people need it.”

This averts the tendency of imposter syndrome, asking yourself who am I to write a book, is anyone going to enjoy this?

Tip #3

Your reader wants to hear from YOU.

Stop worrying if other writers have covered your topic–your next reader hasn’t heard it from you.

“Sometimes they've heard it seven times, but they need to hear it for the eighth time and you're the one that says it right then, when they need it the most.

“You may be the one doctor on a flight that saves the passenger’s life.”

Tip #4

Three Magic Words: Can I just…

“If I had one last tip to share on my deathbed, it would be the Can I just technique,” says Derek.

It hinges on micro-commitments.

“BJ Fogg, a Stanford researcher, talks about tiny habits. Steven Guise of Mini Habits, James Clear of Atomic Habits, plus several others have talked about this concept of a micro commitment. It's something so tiny that you're guaranteed to say yes to doing it.
