Episode 65 with Dr. Sam Hiew

"Growing up in an Asian country, we didn’t talk about mental health. If you’re struggling, you need to suck it up and get over it."

Dr. Hiew is the Director of ADHD Girls in the UK, and has an extensive background in communications and cancer research.

Raised in Malaysia, she won the Malaysian Prime Minister’s scholarship to study her postgraduate degree in the UK, where she now resides.

Having worked in 16 different business sectors over the years, she spent the last decade as a communications consultant helping doctors, scientists and data experts convey the value of their research to a wider audience through written and video media.

She was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year at the age of 40, and she’s currently pursuing an ASD diagnosis. Her diagnosis (and her daughter’s diagnosis) led her to develop ADHD Girls, where she operates as a vocal advocate and mentor for girls and women with ADHD, helping them understand their brains and learn to thrive in education and workplace systems.

We talk all about her experiences navigating academia both in Malaysia and in the UK, and we talk about motherhood in general and how she’s now able to advocate for her daughter within the school system.

Dr. Hiew is a fantastic resource and a real champion for women and girls and I was so pleased to get this chance to find out more about her own journey. Enjoy!
