Thursday, October 17th, 2019

Good morning and welcome to the WODDITY podcast for news about CrossFit. We are a daily podcast, Monday through Friday, doing CrossFit news in five minutes or less.

My name is Ben Garves and today is Thursday, the 17th of October, 2019. It’s D-Day number two: the second Dave Castro Day with a workout announcement for the 2020 CrossFit Open.

You’ve sat through a week of me hyping it, and now it’s actually going to happen. You can watch the workout announcement and commentary live on WODDITY’s YouTube channel by following the link in my show notes. I’ll start the 20.2 broadcast right at 4:30 Pacific, 7:30 Eastern.

Watch the 20.2 Open Live Stream

Here are the tools and resources I’ve pulled together for you, and I have links in the show notes for each of them:

Intro videos for Matt Mcleod (watch) and Khan Porter (watch) , the two Aussies who will be going head-to-head in 20.2 this evening.WODDITY’s special edition Open-ready tee shirts. One says “I’m OPEN Minded” for the individual athletes out there, the other says “I’m in an OPEN relationship” for those with a special gym buddy in mind. I love these shirts - we grabbed the best possible fit and material available. The 20.2 live stream -- click the reminder button now and YouTube will alert you when the broadcast starts

Trash Talk Thursdays

Each year, five top Canadian CrossFit athletes participate in a highly-entertaining competition they like to call Trash Talk Thursdays. Travis Williams, Lukas Esslinger, Jason Carroll, Patrick Vellner, and Brent Fikowski pick a unique punishment for the athlete among them who finishes last in the week’s CrossFit Open workout. The lucky winner this week was Brent Fikowski, who’s 150th-place finish garnished him with what the Trash Talk Thursdays group has deemed a “Dirt Sandwich”. Each athlete picked an ingredient, and Fikowski sat down to eat it between two slices of bread. The choices were: sardines, sauerkraut, limburger cheese, and gummy worms. Yum. Check out the poor guy and his dirt sandwich if you need a laugh today. The link is in my notes.

20.2 Workout Clues

We did a lot of donkey talk last week on account of Dave Castro’s workout clue. This week we’re talking grass. Castro is back again with another nearly nonsensical hint about what the 20.2 workout is. The picture is of a lawn, with a number of intended or unintended or really who cares about whether it was intended or unintended or if they are important subtleties or just unplanned consequences of the piece of lawn Castro picked and I’m not stressed out about this, you’re stressed out about this.

The lawn closer to the camera is darker and unkempt, while a clear line marks the start of some greener grass on the other side. Important observation? We’ll find out tonight. The most simple and logical explanation I’ve heard is the ass-to-grass concept: that the workout will involve a squat movement, like a squat clean, thruster, front-squat, or something similar. I personally like the idea of a front squat. If we’re looking at a “grass is greener” scenario, it may be that we’re looking at another couplet and both movements are miserable. Either way, I’m excited. I guess.

Morning Chalk Up still believes the workout could be a repeat, writing in their newsletter this morning that they think the most likely culprit is 17.2:

A 12-minute AMRAP with 2 rounds of a 50-foot dumbbell walking lunge, 16 toes-to-bar, and 8 dumbbell power cleans, followed by two rounds of the same complex, with the 16 toes-to-bar replaced by 16 bar muscle-ups. This fits the “grass is always greener” theory because you may be doing the toes-to-bar and wish for the muscle ups, or vice versa.

Rogue Invitational Legends

Earlier this week I mentioned Chris Spealler had received an invite to participate in the Rogue Invitational’s Legends competition. So far we’ve also heard that Julie Foucher and Tanya Wagner will be joining him in Columbus this May.

And that’s it for news about CrossFit on Thursday, October 17th. Thanks for listening. Be sure to rate, review, and subscribe. It’s the best way to give back to the show, because it helps more people find us. I’m Ben Garves.
