The writing is on the wall for the 2020 CrossFit Games team competition, tomorrow is the Reebok Nano X release date, and much much more.

Good morning and welcome to the WODDITY podcast for news about CrossFit. We are a daily podcast, Monday through Friday, doing CrossFit news in five minutes or less.

My name is Ben Garves and today is...well, let’s just say May the 4th be with you. Which is something I would’ve said a lot more in elementary school, back when I was cute and had a lisp. Don’t worry guys, I’ve grown out of it.

Today I have a ton of smaller stories, but the big headlines are what’s happening to the teams competition at 2020 CrossFit Games and it’s the last time you’ll hear me mention the Reebok Nano X release date because...well...

Reebok Nano X Release

If you’re one of the holdouts who refused to sign up for Reebok’s free UNLOCKED program to get early access to the Reebok Nano X, then tomorrow is the day you’ve been waiting for. Yes, the latest CrossFit shoe release date is tomorrow, the 5th of May. On a calendar, that’s 5/5, which adds up to ten, and this is the tenth shoe in the series. So clever. So clever.

Make sure you set your alarms to 12:01 AM tonight if you want to join the masses of sneakerheads in the digital rush to cop the latest pair. I have links to that launch in the show notes of this podcasting app and at WODDITY.com.

CrossFit Games Teams Cancellation

Leading the CrossFit Games headlines was a big opinion piece on how CrossFit has all but formally announced that the 2020 team competition will be cancelled. Summarizing that opinion? CrossFit is trying to let y’all down easy. In reality, the writing is already on the wall.

Beside the fact that the Ranch at Aromas doesn’t have space for even the full list of individual National Champions, the city of Aromas has basically no hotels, and the painful tidbit that the age groups events have been cancelled, Dave Castro’s live Q&A put a few tough nails in the metaphorical coffin of disappointment.

First, he intentionally acknowledged, then ducked a direct question about what was going to happen to the team competition. Instead, he actively used, at least six times, the phrase, “just the individuals”. And when I say “actively” I mean “ACTIVELY”. The Q&A session ran for ten-plus minutes and it took me about three minutes to put together a super cut of him saying it. I’ve posted the cut, it’s about 3:42 in. The direct link is in the show notes for you.

He said it a LOT. And Castro is a pretty authoritative source, what with him being the Director of the Games and all. This is about as direct of a confirmation that teams will be cancelled Castro and CrossFit can get to without directly saying it. I mean, they’ve said it. They just haven’t said it.

I’m sorry for your loss. Especially the athletes who have worked so hard to get their invites. But I think Castro is right. CrossFit is doing the right thing by trying to preserve as much of the season as it can, and running a partial event of the best individual athletes is, in itself, still quite the difficult task in a lockdown.

CrossFit Headlines

Now, for the best of the headlines in the CrossFit community:

Dani Speegle has joined TikTok and it’s official. The woman can dance. Rich Froning told Men’s Health how important it is to him to find time to train alone because of how much wear and tear constantly competing can have on the body and the brain. CrossFit has posted pictures of their first event Level 1 Webinar sessions. Katrin Davidsdottir and Annie Thorisdottir are back with the second episode of Dottir Talks. This time, Katrin shares her first experience with CrossFit.Rory McKernan was on the Business of Fitness podcast with Jason Khalipa and the two delve into old school CrossFit Games memories.Heber Cannon and Marston Sawyers (aka the Buttery Bros) were on the Make Pods Great Again podcast with Niki Brazier and John Wooley.

And, closing things out, WHOOP did some good work on their last few blog posts, sharing a number of workouts programmed by multi-CrossFit Games athlete Marcus Filly and a long list of what you can use for weights at home if you don’t have any gear.

And that’s it for news about CrossFit for Monday, May 4th. Thanks for listening. Please be sure to rate, review, subscribe, and share. For WODDITY, I’m Ben Garves. Behave yourselves out there.
