I Am Wilshire – Tyler Wade.

Hometown: Greencastle, Indiana

College/Education: M.S., Miami University (Oxford, Ohio), B.A., Wabash College (Crawfordsville, Indiana)

Profession: College admissions

Present City: Dallas (Lakewood)

What do you do for work? I’m a regionally based recruiter for Wabash College, a small, private liberal arts college for men in Indiana. Admission counselors help students and families with the college application process, serve as resources, answer questions, read applications and issue recommendations on admission. This is my eighth year working in higher education.

Tell us about your family. My family is in Indiana. My dad works in trucking and logistics, and my mom works in chiropractic care. I have a younger brother who plays football and studies rhetoric and economics at Wabash. He’s interested in becoming a college athletics administrator.

Favorite pastimes or hobbies? I enjoy playing golf, walking or biking around White Rock Lake, cooking, traveling, trying new restaurants and reading. I also enjoy following sports. I am very passionate about talking local and state politics as well as promoting civic engagement and education.

What brought you to Wilshire? I joined Wilshire in July 2020 after listening to a virtual panel on racial justice hosted by Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins that featured George. I was a member of a Baptist church in Indiana and had been looking for a church home here. When I Googled George and Wilshire, I saw the church was in my neighborhood and I knew it was the right place for me!

Where are you involved at church? I am a member of the Ithaka Sunday School Class and the Christian Advocacy Committee.

Tell us about your faith journey. I am a big reader and spend the first few minutes of every day reading a devotional and studying Scripture. I’m very passionate about talking about big ideas generally and specifically enjoy discussions about how our faith impacts our daily life.

What are your strengths? From the StrengthsFinder personality test: Achiever, Belief, Context, Deliberative and Harmony.

What’s a funny or interesting thing that has happened to you? One of the most interesting things that happened to me was meeting Tom Hanks at a college football game. I was in a suite getting a cup of coffee when this very familiar voice asked, “Excuse me, sir, do you know where I could get some creamer?” In an instant I thought, “Is that Woody from Toy Story?” I turned around to find that it was indeed Tom Hanks! He is a very nice man and was in town visiting his son. Definitely an unforgettable experience!
