I Am Wilshire – Bryan Rollins.

Education: BS in economics and MBA from the University of Texas at Austin

Profession: Human resources manager (retired)

Present city: Dallas

Tell us about your work. I’m retired from PwC after 30 years. I worked for them in Dallas, Portland and Seattle.

Favorite pastimes? Going to my gym, activities with friends, yard work, crossword puzzles and the Daily Jumble.

Favorite books? The Catcher in the Rye would have to be one; I’ve read it three times. The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog: And Other Stories from a Child Psychiatrist’s Notebook is both educational and fascinating.

Favorite places to travel? Colorado, Washington and California. I hope to travel more once we get past the pandemic.

What brought you to Wilshire and when? I retired in late 2016, moved from Seattle back to Dallas and wanted a nearby church to attend. I read an article in the Dallas Morning News about the vote that Wilshire had taken in 2016 and decided that Wilshire was probably not fundamentalist or evangelical. I visited the next Sunday and joined a few months later.

Where are you engaged in Wilshire? I attend the Foundations of Faith Class. Pre-pandemic, I attended Wednesday sessions. One Thursday each month a group from Wilshire worked at the Stewpot. I’ve also participated in volunteer activities involving the Wilkinson Center and Rise Against Hunger.

What has surprised you about Wilshire? I was initially surprised by how few single people are in the church and by how few people there are in their 20s and 30s. That may just be what I see in the 9 a.m. service and my Sunday School class.

Tell us about your faith journey. In my youth I was strongly influenced by both Christians and atheists, so I’m somewhat of a doubting Thomas. I joined the Presbyterian Church at 10, but it wasn’t until I joined Wilshire that I actually read through the entire Bible and attended classes where we discussed the history, context, controversies and meaning of the Bible.

What’s something interesting most people wouldn’t know about you? I have met Lyndon Johnson, Agnes Morehead, Al Franken and Mohammed Ali.

What adjectives best describe you? Dependable, forthright (to a fault), self-sufficient, skeptical, easygoing.

Greatest influences in your life? My parents, my maternal grandmother and the Church.
