On this week’s Thanksgiving episode of When God Breaks Through, Bethany shares a listener’s question.

“How do I successfully help my children navigate the world’s culture of entitlement and how do you teach gratitude and speak into this area with Gospel conversations?”

Bethany has discovered three different areas where we can find the opposite of gratitude in our children’s lives.

-Possessiveness

-Selfishness

-Entitlement

In parenting, we can identify each of these at certain times of growth in our children’s lives.  Each one steers Bethany in the right direction of how to speak into each of her eight children.

Addressing these three sinful nature highlight reels, Bethany reminds us that these are opportunities to bring the Gospel conversation to the attention of our children.

Through various age ranges, she explains how we can begin to see and notice and gracefully guide our children to experience freedom from selfishness, entitlement, and possessiveness.

Culturally, we see a child-centered approach which suggests that our child’s happiness is number one.  When we center our family on the happiness of our children, we feed into the sinful nature which says, “I am owed happiness, contentment, and comfort.”  Those things are not true in the Gospel.

Before we have these redemptive Gospel conversations with our children, we have to look inward and evaluate where we are discontent or are feeling entitled.

Bethany discusses the practical ways we can observe, confront without shame, and create opportunities to share the Good News from each  childhood stage.
