We Gauge Cage

127 episodes - English - Latest episode: 6 months ago - ★★★★★ - 15 ratings

Two Best F***ing Friends Forever For Life For Real For Sure are very skeptical of whether Nicolas Cage is actually the "good" actor that everyone seems to accept he is. Truth be told, Brian and Brock haven't seen enough Nic Cage movies to be sure. So each week they will watch and review one of his movies, rated from worst to best, in an effort to gauge Cage's performance and ultimately decide whether or not he is worth his status as the World's Favorite Good Bad Actor.

Episode 72 - Matchstick Men (2003)

May 08, 2019 04:00 - 2 hours - 73.5 MB

Blame it on the juice. Got you feelin' loose. Blame it on the 'tron. Got you in the zone. Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-alcohol.  Blame it all on Nic Cage. He's the reason we're over 70 episodes deep, watching a surprisingly competent con man film from 2003 called "Matchstick Men." Nic takes a couple of behavioral disorders for a spin, accompanied by Sam Rockwell and an actress whom shall lovingly be referred to as "not-Egg." (Where my Arrested Development fans at?) Anywho, this one gets...wil...

Episode 71 - Birdy (1984)

May 01, 2019 04:00 - 2 hours - 55.3 MB

You down with Matt Modine? Yeah, you know me. You down with Nic Cagey? Every last homie. You down with ol' Birdy? Yeah, you know me. Who down with this movie? All the homies! I'll be straight with ya, folks. This one got weird. And I don't mean like, "man attempting intercourse on a small bird" weird. But it got weird nonetheless. In perhaps the most incoherent and tangential attempt at a podcast to date, the boys scrounged together enough attention for Nic's 1984 VIETNAM WAR FILM "Birdy" t...

Episode 70 - The Croods (2013)

April 24, 2019 18:00 - 2 hours - 59.1 MB

Papa don't preach. We're in trouble deep. Papa don't preach. We've been losing sleep. But we've made up our minds. We're watching Nic's movie. Ooh-ooh we're going to watch this movie, ooOOooh.... The boys are back! Did you miss them?!? Did you even know they were gone? Did you realize that it has been weeks since they've sat down and recorded last? Fresh off the heels of the worst possible movie that Nic has ever made, this week Brian and Brock got a palette cleanser in the 2013 animated mo...

Episode 69 - Wild at Heart (1990)

April 17, 2019 13:00 - 2 hours - 63.5 MB

Shot Wild at Heart! And David Lynch is to blame! He gives films a bad name... But seriously, folks. We've joked in the past about quitting the podcast. We've made false threats about hanging up our Nic Cage-watching boots and cashing in all of our good favors and riding off into the sunset as free men. We should have gotten out while the gettin' was good.  Because Brock and Brian - wait, let me start over... - Because Brian FORCED Brock to scour the depths of the Dark Web for this absolutel...

Episode 68 - Moonstruck (1987)

April 10, 2019 07:00 - 1 hour - 45.6 MB

Ah yes, the year 1987. "Walk Like An Egyptian" topped the charts, Ronald Reagan was president, and your two favorite podcast hosts were finally born after months of anticipation! Who would've guessed that over 30 years later they'd spend literally hundreds of hours analyzing every film of one Nicolas Cage, including the 1987 hit "Moonstruck," starring not only Nicolas Cage, but also a surprisingly good performance from Cher. But we're not here to gauge Cher, because, come on...that doesn't e...

Episode 67 - Red Rock West (1993)

April 03, 2019 03:00 - 1 hour - 44.9 MB

Uh wicky wild wild. Wicky wild wild. Wicky Red Rock West. Nic West. Desperado. Rough Rida. No you don’t want nada.  None of this. Six gun in this. Nic Cage runnin’ this.  But I’ll tell you what you DO want! You want to hear about the time Brian and Brock plopped down around the ol’ campfire and watched them some Red Rock West. Nic Cage, Lara Flynn Boyle, Dennis Hopper. A classic who-dunnit mix-em-up crime caper with guns and money and...cars with empty gas tanks, I guess?  Before all that,...

Episode 66 - National Treasure (2004)

March 27, 2019 07:00 - 2 hours - 71.2 MB

"Have you seen National Treasure?"  For Nic's sake, Brian and Brock can finally say "Yes!" They have! They have seen National Treasure! Okay?!? So lay the heck off! Please and thank you! Geez! Holy buckets! Benjamin Franklin Gates! Abagail! Doug from the Hangover!  Is it the same movie as the sequel? We'll find out! And we'll bring in the History and Mystery expert herself, Amanda Flannery-Hoppa, to help with the debate! Before all that, the boys (and girl) take a few corrective measures, ...

Episode 65 - Joe (2013)

March 20, 2019 07:00 - 1 hour - 50.2 MB

I see Nic Cage a-comin'. He's coming round the bend. And he ain't made a good film since, I don't know when.  But every now and then, there are some diamonds in the rough. And this week, Brock and Brian found a real depressing diamond in Nic's 2013 film "Joe." For once, Nic plays an ex-con and yet he's not the one in the film that could be described as a full-blown psychopath. It's a surprising turn.  Before all of that, Brock channels his inner Simon Cowell and Dr. Seuss in order to drop ...

Episode 64 - Con Air (1997)

March 13, 2019 05:00 - 2 hours - 59.8 MB

His bags are packed. He's ready to go. He's standing outside his cell door. He hates to wake you up to say goodbye...Cause he's leavin' on a jet plane. Don't know if he'll be back again.  That's right, ladies and gentlemen. Finally. We made it. Brian and Brock got to bear witness to the living weapon himself, Cameron Poe. Star of 1997's action classic "Con Air." Co-starring such heavy-hitters as Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, Dave Chappelle, John Cusack, and John Malkovich, this movie pulled o...

Episode 63 - Bringing Out the Dead (1999)

March 05, 2019 05:00 - 1 hour - 52.7 MB

Every Rose has its ghost. Just like every night has its EMT shift. Just like every Ambulance driver has their sad, sad song. Every Rose has its ghost.... Hey look. They can't all be winners. Such is the case with this 1999 Scorsese dud, "Bringing Out the Dead." Nic Cage stars alongside John Goodman, the ever-famous and supremely talented Ving Rhames, and some talentless zombie they found on the street named Patty Arkett or something like that.  Before all that, Brock and Brian get real emo...

Episode 62 - Racing With The Moon (1984)

February 26, 2019 05:00 - 2 hours - 58.7 MB

Oh Cagey. Why don't you just meet us in the middle? We're losing our minds just a little. Ladies and Gentlemen, could I interest you in a romance, set in the 40's, starring two star-crossed lovers (he from the working-class side of town, she from a well-to-do, upper crust family) on the verge of the young man and his best friend shipping off to war? What if I told you there was a scene where he plays piano with her? What If I told you that he's charmingly awkward and she's charmingly well-e...

Episode 61 - The Family Man (2000)

February 19, 2019 05:00 - 2 hours - 62.1 MB

Love is all that I can give to you. Love is more than just a game for two.  Which is why we needed four for this particular episode. It's our annual Valentine's Day episode, so we invited the wives back onto the podcast to talk about Nic Cage's 2000 Christmas, family, rommy commy film "The Family Man." Let's just say there was a difference of opinion on this one. Somehow.  Before all that, we go back for a deeper dive on City of Angels/Iris. We discuss our respective Valentine's Day plans....

Episode 60 - City of Angels (1998)

February 13, 2019 10:00 - 2 hours - 58 MB

I don't want to wait. For this film to be over. I want to know right now, which will it be? Will Nic get another thumbs up, or will he fail to rise to the occasion? Brian and Brock sat down on their comfy couches and pored over Nic Cage and Meg Ryan's 1998 whirlwind romance/stalking horror/extended Goo Goo Dolls music video "City of Angels." This movie had angels. It had a city. It had lots of "of." So much "of." Arguably too much "of." Before all that, the boys talk life and death, the pe...

Episode 59 - Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009)

February 05, 2019 05:00 - 2 hours - 59 MB

The boy is back in town. The boy is back in town.  That's right. Back for another live recording together, in the same room, holding hands, gazing longingly into each other's eyes, shirts off, all bets also off, and with more energy than any two boys should be able to muster. Brock and Brian watched the heck out of 2009's Nic Cage/Werner Herzog confusingly-titled and even more confusingly-shot collabo "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans." Truthfully, you can probably skip watching t...

Episode 58 - The Weather Man (2005)

January 30, 2019 05:00 - 1 hour - 51.3 MB

Well the weather outside is...weather. But inside, the boys are so delightful. And since they've no place to go, let them tell you about a 2005 Nic Cage film that they watched by the name of "The Weather Man." It's a tale as old as time about...a...weather man.  But before we can talk about The Weather Man, let's talk about the weather, man. It's real cold in Minnesota, people. Brock begins his Apology Tour. Talk a little football. How's work at the restaurant going, Bri? Baby talk. Brian ...

Episode 57 - Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

January 23, 2019 05:00 - 2 hours - 58.6 MB

Gone like a freight train. Gone like yesterday. Gone like a Nic Cage in the Civil War. Bang Bang.  The boys done gone and done it, I tell you what. They watched Nic Cage's seminal '00 classic "Gone in 60 Seconds." We can say that this movie co-starred Angelina Jolie. But did it? Really? Does that count? The fellas were...underwhelmed.  Before all that, they discuss their Bert and Ernie-style plans for childcare, Brian retreats back into his gripe corner to talk about the restaurant, and we...

Episode 56 - National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007)

January 16, 2019 05:00 - 2 hours - 60.9 MB

National Treasure! That is what you are. Baby you're my golden star.  And speaking of babies, the baby boys plunked on down and watched Nicolas Cage's bonafide hit, all-time smash, 2007 box office superstar film "National Treasure: Book of Secrets." The sequel. The second one.  No, they still haven't seen the original film. No, they won't get to it for a while. Yes, they chatter on about a few other topics before they get to all that treasure-hunting'! Brock celebrates the Saints' playoff v...

Episode 55 - 8MM (1999)

January 09, 2019 05:00 - 2 hours - 57.9 MB

I always feel like, somebody's watching Nic! This week, the boys did. They sure did watch ol' Nicolas and his 1999 output "8MM." It's a doozy of a snuff-obsessed thriller with a twist that one of our hosts saw coming from a mile away. Snuff film? More like Snoozff film, amiright?!? Before that, Brock and Brian regale the listeners with their latest, weightiest competition. They take some real umbrage with unique baby names. And you will NEVER guess what Brian puts into his mouth on this on...

Episode 54 - Between Worlds (2018)

January 02, 2019 12:00 - 1 hour - 53.6 MB

I feel it in my fingers. I feel it in my toes. Nic Cage is all around me. And so the feeling grows.  It's the new year, babies! What better way to celebrate than watching the newest and what could possibly be the absolute worst movie of Nic Cage's oeuvre? Brock and Brian watched his 2018 horror/thriller "Between Worlds." But I'll tell you a secret. They wished they hadn't. Before all that, the boys break a little personal news. They talk Christmas and caroling. And they talk baby talk.  L...

Episode 52 - Valley Girl (1983)

December 12, 2018 05:00 - 2 hours - 64.5 MB

Happy Anniversary to us!  52 Weeks. 52 Episodes. 52 Nicolas Cage duds.  When we set out to do this podcast, we truly didn't know if we were going to be able to finish.  But here we are, one year later. One year wiser. One year better.  Thank you, to all of the hardcore listeners. Thank you to anyone who even tuned in once before deciding it wasn't for them. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much. This one is a long one. But it's been a year in the making.  This week, Brian and Brock watch...

Episode 51 - Peggy Sue Got Married (1986)

December 05, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 50.2 MB

Relax. Don't do Nic. When you wanna go through Nic.  What an episode. What a film. The boys watched 1986's "Peggy Sue Got Married." Starring a young Kathleen Turner. A younger, wilder Nic Cage. And directed by Nic's revered uncle Franny Ford Copes himself. It...was a movie. Certainly was that.  Before they travel back in time, the lads discuss Brian's horniness for a particular December holiday, Brock spins a yarn about being an extra in a film shoot (with a secret), and they regale the au...

Episode 50 - Astro Boy (2009)

November 29, 2018 13:00 - 1 hour - 40.4 MB

Let's get down to business. To defeat, the Huns. Did they send me Nic Cage? When I asked, for sons? You're a sorry, sad, pathetic lot, and before tonight is through. Nic Cage, I'll make an actor of you! Speaking of sorry, sad, and pathetic...Brock and Brian watched Nic Cage's 2009 animated triumph "Astro Boy." Do you remember Astro Boy? Did anyone see Astro Boy? You don't need to see Astro Boy.  Before all that, the human male podcast hosts discuss their Thanksgiving dinners, we get an upd...

Episode 49 - It Could Happen To You (1994)

Turkey for me. Turkey for you. I like my turkey in a big brown shoe... Happy Nicsgiving, y'all! This year, let's really focus on the reason for the season. And the reason for this podcast. Which is...to sh*t on one of Hollywood's most respected and revered actors, and put him in his place? We guess? If there's anything the boys are thankful for, it's a solid 90-minute run time. And friendship. They're thankful for each others' friendship. Friendship is what keeps them moving on. Friendship...

Episode 48 - Knowing (2009)

November 15, 2018 06:00 - 1 hour - 47.3 MB

We rawdogged pills in Ibiza, to show Nic Cage that we were cool. And when we finally got sober, it was 48 episodes older, but F it, it was something to do.  There's no way of Knowing which film Brock and Brian watched this week. We Know it's from 2009. We Know that Rose Byrne co-stars. We Know that it had something to do with...Aliens? Aliens. But we couldn't possibly be Knowing the title. It's like an all-drummies basket of chicken...No Wing.  Speaking of vomit-inducing attempts at humor,...

Episode 47 - Next (2007)

November 08, 2018 04:00 - 2 hours - 55 MB

It's Saturday night and we're in the spot. Don't believe me? Just watch.  And watch they did. The boys watched Nic Cage's 2007....effort..."Next." And not the salacious MTV dating show. No, this "Next" had magic. And superpowers. And superjuice. And Jessica Biel.  Before all that, the lovable lads regale the audience with tales of Brock's Grand vacation, Brian's baggy-diapered bacchanal, and...you know...some light string theory and quantum physics talk. Something like that.  Let's get in...

October 31, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 44.6 MB

Nobody knows the trouble we've seen. Nobody knows our sorrow... My goodness gracious, did the fellas walk right into a stinker of a film this week. One might say it was downright horror-ble! Your brave boys Brock and Brian took a trip into the old, abandoned, spooky castle for another one of Nic's castle-period thrillers "Seeking Justice."  But before the guys attempt to polish that turd, they talk dinner plans, they talk wife gripes, and they spill the tea on one of their most infamous ba...

Episode 45 - Guarding Tess (1994)

October 25, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 44.1 MB

***Full Disclosure: Our editor completely blew this week's editing budget on Reese's Minis and completely fudged up the original posted version. The sound was off. So if you downloaded that version, feel free to delete it and play this one instead!***  Now, where were we? Well we were working in the lab, late one night. When our eyes beheld an eerie sight. For our monster from the slab began to rise. And suddenly, to our surprise... ...He was Nic Cage! That's right, boys and ghouls! Brock ...

Episode 44 - The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)

October 18, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 45.7 MB

It's too late to 'pologize...It's too late! After the aural assault that we laid upon their fans last episode, the boys have returned with their tails between their legs to review a normal, light-hearted, magical romp through New York City a la Nic's 2010 classic "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." Brian asserts that this film is based entirely off of the Mickey Mouse "Fantasia" short of the same name. Brock asserts "Wtf are you talking about?" Before all that, the "Baruchel Bros" discuss politic...

Episode 43 - Windtalkers (2002)

October 09, 2018 04:00 - 2 hours - 55 MB

Holy buckets, y'all. Holy freaking buckets.  We'll be perfectly honest. We have no idea what to write here, because we truthfully don't remember recording half of this episode... Here's what we DO know: - This is our second Live episode. Brock and Brian are back together under the same roof.  - We started this recording with a full bottle of rum. We ended this recording with an empty bottle of rum.  - At some point, the boys must discuss Nic Cage's 2002 film "Windtalkers," a WW2 drama. We t...

Episode 42 - Mandy (2018)

October 03, 2018 04:00 - 2 hours - 57.4 MB

***Warning, at the top. This film (and the podcast that follows) is traumatic, disturbing, and downright nasty. So, it's going to be a rough one. Fair warning. You've been warned. Can't say we didn't warn ya. Achtung, baby!*** That's right, mother'sdaughters! Surprise! I bet you all thought we were watching Windtalkers this week. But we switched up the game, we seized the opportunity, we claimed our birthright, and we jumped way ahead to watch Nic Cage's festival circuit darling, his (at one...

Episode 41 - World Trade Center (2006)

Where were you when the world stopped turning? Yeah? We're going to start on this note? Hoo boy...strap in and get your tissues ready for this one. The boys (respectfully) watched the 2006 Nic Cage film "World Trade Center," a drama about the titular buildings that were attacked by terrorists and the heroes that were trapped beneath them. Yep. But it's also a Nic Cage film...so...take that for what it's worth. Before all that, the gentlemen scholars take you lucky listeners on a (respectfu...

Episode 40 - Snake Eyes (1998)

September 19, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 44.8 MB

Whoa, we're halfway there. Whoa. Oh. Living on a prayer. Take our hands, the boys watched Nic Cage's 1998 crime thriller "Snake Eyes," we swear. A somewhat confusing and ambitious film directed by Brian de Palma (of "Scarface" and "The Untouchables" fame) co-starring Gary Sinise and world-famous actress Carla Gugino. Before/after/around all that, the boys play a hot & boozy wet mouth game (which, coincidentally, describes Brock's college reputation). They look forward to the future. And B...

Episode 39 - Vampire's Kiss (1989)

September 13, 2018 04:00 - 2 hours - 57.5 MB

I'm a vampire. You're a vampire. She's a vampire. 'Cause we're all vampires, hey! Oh goodness. Oh man. Oh boy. And oh geez. This is the big one, folks. The big Kahuna. The big enchilada. This is not a drill. The boys have finally cashed in on all of their Nic Cage movie gambles and went full tilt this week. It paid off with a chance to watch 1988's thriller (?) vampire (?) film "Vampire's Kiss." This entire cinematic experience is PEAK Cage from tip to tip. It's the meme-worthy classic th...

The faithful and dedicated boys sat down to watch 1994's Nic Cage, Dana Carvey, and Jon Lovitz holiday team-up "Trapped in Paradise." Oh boy...Oh boy boy boy. Before all that, Brock and Brian discussed the Princess of Pop Tay Tay and her amazing performance, the true Christmas spirit, proper restaurant etiquette, and dining (forever) alone. Let's get into it. Find us on our...

Episode 37 - 211 (2018)

August 29, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 42.2 MB

Ugh. Just...ugh. *sigh*... Just when we thought we were out, Nic pulls us back in! The boys took a trip back to the Castle Period in order to watch his 2018 craptacular effort "211." Yep. That is the title of a movie alright. Do with it what you will. Before they plumb those depths, however, they give a little more follow-up on their respective weekends, and they get to the bottom of what the hell is wrong with young children (hint: It's Brian's "Controversial Take of the Week!"). Let's...

Episode 36 - Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001)

August 26, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 39.1 MB

Never Fear, because Brock and Brian are here. But oh my goodness! Thank god Brock was brave and quick-witted and resourceful enough to rescue Brian from the clutches of that nefarious, underground, evil group of organized criminals in time to record a podcast episode this week! Sincerely, for those of you that depend on us for weekly content, we apologize that we were forced to record and release the podcast a few days later than usual and deliver it to your earholes. But also sincerely, don'...

Episode 35 - The Ant Bully (2006)

August 16, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 33.2 MB

We work hard (they work hard!). Every day of our life. We work 'til we ache in our bones. At the end of the day, we take home my hard earned pay all our own! We get down on our knees, and we start to pray, 'til the tears run down from our eyes! Speaking of tear-jerkers, this week the gentlemen fancypantsers watched 2006's animated, ant-related offering (No, not THAT movie. No, nor THAT one either...) "The Ant Bully." Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Paul Giamatti, sex-cult leader A...

Episode 34 - Kiss of Death (1995)

August 09, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 39.2 MB

You drink a whiskey drink, you drink a lager drink, you drink a vodka drink, you drink a cider drink. You sing the songs that remind you of the good times, you sing the songs that remind you of anything but this god-awful excuse for a cinematic movie. That's right. The lovable boys watched the 1995 David Caruso/Nic Cage action crime thriller "Kiss of Death." It...it was problematic. Before that, the boys talk about their weekends, give more insight into the movies that they'll actually pa...

The oft-mentioned JK himself, Jon Keepers joins us for this watch of the 1992 rom-com Honeymoon in Vegas. Before we hop into the juicy deets of this film, we take a long trip down memory lane, we play a few one-sided games, we talk about some ...

July 28, 2018 04:00 - 1 hour - 46.7 MB

"How funky is your chicken?" My chicken's really funky. "How loose is your goose?" My goose is totally loose. "Now come on, you Cage Gaugers, and shake your caboose."We're shaking our caboose. The fellas could not conceive their luck when they got the privilege of watching Nic Cage's 2017 thriller (an ACTUAL thriller this time!) "Inconceivable." Episode 31 - Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001)
