Virtual Walk Talk Listen with Maurice Rugebregt (episode 56)

Maurice Rugebregt [1969] had his first guitar lesson at the age of 12. As a youngster he listened to jazz artists like Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and his first guitar hero, Wes Montgomery. He studied guitar at the Conservatory of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. His teachers were Klaus Flenter, Ben de Bruijn and the American jazz-guitarist Joe Pass. In 1994 he went to New York City to study with established guitarists such as Jim Hall, Peter Bernstein and Peter Leitch. He graduated as a Performing Musician at the Rotterdam Conservatory in 1995.
 
Sioh Maluku [Nostalgia for the Moluccas] is was his first solo project. After graduating from the Rotterdam Conservatory, Maurice traveled to the Moluccan capitol Ambon, in search of his roots. Once there, he started his search for traditional Moluccan music. He bought tapes of local folk music and taped people singing traditional songs. Upon his return home, Maurice selected several Moluccan traditionals, arranged and recorded them accompanied by some of the best Dutch jazz, latin and Moluccan musicians. The result was Sioh Maluku, a true world-music CD containing 11 refreshingly vibrant Brazilian, jazz and pop arrangements of traditional Moluccan songs.
 
Since 1999 Maurice has been teaching Brazilian guitar and jazz harmony at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Maurice traveled to Brazil in 2003 to study with Brazilian guitarists like Ricardo Silveira and Nelson Faria. In 2004 Maurice recorded with ZUCO 103 with Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira on their unplugged album One Down One Up.  The album  NEXT (2014) was his second solo album. His third solo album was Two Blues, a tribute to jazz gitarist Jim Hall.
