Happy 94th Birthday Bob Fosse

June 23, 2021 15:04 - 4 minutes - 4.22 MB

Today is the 94th birthday of the choreographer Bob Fosse.  I am partial to Sweet Charity, but Cabaret is pretty much perfection.  He helped propel dance into the widely-recognized and appreciated art form that it is today.  The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left. June 23, 2021 01:01 - 10 minutes - 9.79 MB

Today is the 68th birthday of the singer/songwriter/actor/activist Cyndi Lauper. I remember when her “She’s So Unusual” album was released. She was unusual, she was different, she was everything that we needed, but didn’t know we needed. She has changed the landscape of music and activism over her 30+ year career and we are all the better for it. Song:  The Goonies 'R' Good Enough This episode is also available as a blog post: http://waldina.com/2021/06/22/happy-68th-birthday-cyndi-lauper/...

“Tis a Fearful Thing” – Judah Halevi

June 22, 2021 01:50 - 1 minute - 1.34 MB

‘Tis a fearful thing to love what death can touch. A fearful thing to love, to hope, to dream, to be – to be, And oh, to lose. A thing for fools, this, And a holy thing, a holy thing to love. For your life has lived in me, your laugh once lifted me, your word was gift to me. To remember this brings painful joy. ‘Tis a human thing, love, a holy thing, to love what death has touched.” This episode is also available as a blog post: http://waldina.com/2021/06/21/tis-a-fearful-th...

Happy 100th Birthday Judy Holliday

Today is the 100th birthday of the actress Judy Holliday. Her film performances are all perfection, she will draw you in on a wonderful journey and you will be forever changed through it. It centered on Candy Matson, a female private investigator with a wry sense of humor and a penthouse on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. The program was notable for having a striking female character "without a trace of squeamishness" as well as a veiled gay character in Candy's best friend Rembrandt Watson. --- Send in a voice message: http...

Happy 125th Birthday Wallis Simpson

June 19, 2021 15:55 - 4 minutes - 2.62 MB

Today is the 125th birthday of Wallis Simpson.  The king gave up the throne for her.  Her style remained impeccable for her entire life.  Have you seen W.E.?  Brilliant.  It seems that she and Edward were Nazi sympathizers, smug, and generally unpleasant to be around. Can we separate the art from the artist and still admire one simultaneously despising the other? I sometimes think yes, and most often think no. Tell me what you think. Happy 120th Birthday Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova of Russia

June 19, 2021 01:06 - 4 minutes - 4.31 MB

Today is the 120th birthday of Anastasia, the Russian duchess that was executed with her entire family, servants and dog by Bolsheviks led by Vladmir Lenin.  Books and movies have been produced based on the chance that she somehow survived, but science has caught up and her remains have been confirmed along with the rest of her family.  Still, who doesn’t love a good “princess in hiding” fairy tale? Today is the 154th birthday of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. He was my first introduction to the concept that buildings and interiors can be simple, beautiful, functional, and unique. Happy 88th Birthday Joan Rivers

June 09, 2021 02:05 - 9 minutes - 5.5 MB

Today is the 88th birthday of the bold, brash, and brave entertainer Joan Rivers. She broke down barriers, shattered walls, reinvented herself, diversified, and redefined career longevity. June 07, 2021 15:23 - 6 minutes - 3.85 MB

Today is the 173rd birthday of the artist Paul Gauguin. He art is primitive and modern and colorful and brings a smile to the viewer’s face. Years ago, I was on Moorea in Tahiti, there were little signs about a house where he lived or stayed for a while. Today is the 142nd birthday of the silent film star Alla Nazminova.  Her life story has the sort of arc that could only be believed as a work of fiction.  She was one of the most respected stage actresses and became the highest paid actress in Hollywood.  She produced her own films when no one was, she built a gigantic mansion, threw lavish parties and lived a very free lifestyle.  All that and she found time to be Nancy Reagan’s godmother.  The world is a better place because she was in it ...

Happy 97th Birthday Colleen Dewhurst

June 03, 2021 15:59 - 7 minutes - 4.38 MB

Today is 97th birthday of Colleen Dewhurst.  I was lucky enough to sit in on a Master Class given by her at Interlochen and was blown away by her life and career.  To be honest, I had only known her from the Anne of Green Gables series, but her stories and inspiration that day compelled me to see more.  That voice!  She was an amazing example of how life should be spent.  The world is better because she was in it and still feels the loss that she has left. Happy 115th Birthday Josephine Baker

June 03, 2021 15:57 - 6 minutes - 3.91 MB

Today is the 115th birthday of the one and only Josephine Baker.  Her iconic everything has cemented her in a time and place forever:  Paris between the wars.  The first song of hers that I ever heard was J’ai Deaux Amors and I remember really listening to it and seeking out more of her music.  Her story is tremendous and her trajectory is that of no other.  She started life in St. Louis and by the time of her death, the entire world was in love with her.  Parisians named a swimming pool in ...

Happy 69th Birthday Gilbert Baker

June 03, 2021 00:34 - 5 minutes - 3.02 MB

Today is the 69th birthday of the activist Gilbert Baker. I first learned of his exceptional contributions to the world through Randy Shilts’ book and was happy to see him get more exposure through Dustin Lance Black’s miniseries. Today is the 131st birthday of Hollywood actress and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. Happy 95th Birthday Marilyn Monroe

June 02, 2021 00:07 - 10 minutes - 6 MB

Today is the 95th birthday of the woman that is an American icon, even fifty years after her death:  Marilyn Monroe.  Do yourself a favor and watch The Misfits sometime soon.  You won’t be disappointed.  One of my favorite stories about her is that for 20 years after her death, Joe Dimaggio had red roses delivered to her crypt twice a week. Generations of flower shop delivery boys learned the story, made the drive to visit her final resting place in honor of their baseball hero, replace the ...

“The Diamond As Big As The Ritz” – F. Scott Fitzgerald (1922)

June 01, 2021 23:30 - 1 hour - 44.4 MB

One of the many novels that have stuck with me and I carry around in my head is  a short story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald called “The Diamond as Big as the Ritz.” The story first appeared in the June 1922 issue of The Smart Set, a popular magazine of the 1920s. Originally titled “The Diamond in the Sky,” Fitzgerald had attempted to sell it to the Saturday Evening Post, which had published many of his other stories, but its harsh anticapitalistic message was rejected by the conservative ...

Happy 125th Birthday Howard Hawks

Today is the 125th birthday of the film director Howard Hawks. He directed one of my very favorite films Bringing Up Baby as well as His Girl Friday, The Big Sleep, Monkey Business, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and I Was A Male War Bride. The genres are as varied as the stories themselves, but all excellently told. The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left.
