Advertising is push; social media is pull. PPC is not a solid long term strategy if you want to build a brand people love and trust. With ads, especially PPC on Google search, you are continually paying to acquire your customer over and over. And Google owns the relationship. Think about it, when Google is the portal through which your customers find you and transact you have no control. Google owns you. We've seen it happen where overnight, a change in Google's search algorithm decimates brands who were on page 1 and end up on page 3 which is Siberia.
