What is addiction? Addiction is a chronic dysfunction of the brain system that involves reward, motivation, and memory. Addiction is when your body craves a substance or behaviour and it usually causes a compulsive or obsessive pursuit of “reward” with generally a lack of concern over any consequences.

Someone experiencing an addiction will find it difficult to stay away from the substance or stop the addictive behaviour, they will have a lack of self-control and have an increased desire for the substance or behaviour. They will also dismiss how their behavior may be causing problems and lack an emotional response to the consequences.

Over time, addiction can seriously affect a ones daily life and the addicted person is prone to cycles of relapse and remission. The addicted person may cycle between intense and mild use however, despite these cycles, addictions will typically worsen over time which can lead to permanent health complications and serious consequences like bankruptcy.

The main sign of addiction relates to a persons impaired ability to maintain self-control and the changes include; social, such as seeking out situations that encourage a substance or behavior; behavioral, such as increased secrecy; health related, such as insomnia or memory loss and related to personality

Some behavior and emotional changes associated with addiction include:
• unrealistic or poor assessment of the pros and cons associated with the addiction
• blaming other factors or people for their issues which lead to the addiction
• increased levels of anxiety, depression, and sadness
• increased sensitivity and more severe reactions to stress
• trouble in identifying their feelings
• trouble telling the difference between feelings and the physical sensations of one’s emotions

To rewire an addicted brain, a treatment process is required that will not only heal the body but the mind also. Reaching abstinence is a big victory. But the struggle will continue as you will face triggering situations in your life. Fortunately, meditation that can help you stop reacting to such triggers as it helps you to focus on the mind-body connection. Meditation is used in outpatient rehabilitation centers but can also be used by anyone at home for the same purpose and the goal is to foster well-being.

Studies of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have shown a reduction in substance misuse among people with addictive behaviors, such as excessive drinking and opioid use. MBIs may achieve this outcome by “modulating cognitive, affective, and psychophysiological processes integral to self-regulation and reward processing,” as reported in the study that investigated MBI treatments for addiction, published in the Journal of Addiction Science & Clinical Practice.
