The US has approximately 44,000 movie screens, but the distribution of these screens is anything uniform. The placement of theaters is driven by the perceived economic value of a location’s population. As a result, wealthy communities are home to both indie art-house cinemas and multiplexes, but the areas populated by less wealthy people or where the population is spread thin go completely without. With new theater construction at an all time low, the situation seems unlikely to change.

Enter Kinema.

If uber is a car service without cars and Airbnb is a hotel chain without hotels, then one might describe Kinema as a theater chain without theaters.

Today we’re speaking with Christie Marchese, the CEO and founder of Kinema, an innovative business that eliminates theater deserts and expands access to engaging films.

Topics discussed include:

Why Kinema saw an opportunity where traditional theater chains saw risk.
How Cristie’s experience in impact film and digital strategy informs her approach to solving the problem of cinema deserts.
How a business designed for in real life experiences successfully pivoted to digital at their launch.
How a theater chain without theaters successfully serves its stakeholders.
Why engagement-based screenings can expand the life of a film beyond its first theatrical release.
