“As an internally referenced leader, you source your power from within before, during, and after any external condition.” – Andrea Kayne

Kicking Ass in a Corset  (2021)

Andrea Kayne is the author of KICKING ASS IN A CORSET. She serves as director of the doctoral program in educational leadership and is an associate professor at DePaul University.

Today we’re speaking to Andrea about her book and exploring how a writer who lived 200 years ago in patriarchal, misogynistic rural England can teach today’s leaders.

Topics include:

How Jane Austen’s archetypal heroines relate to today’s leaders and the skills they need for living and leading.
Why fictional characters can be instructive in real life situations.
What internally referenced leadership is and what it looks like in real life.
Why it’s important to question “universal truths”.
Why the paradox of internally referenced leadership is actually at the heart of its power.

Andrea Kayne serves as director of the doctoral program in educational leadership and is associate professor at DePaul University. She has taught, written, and consulted in the areas of empowered leadership, feminist leadership, emotionally intelligent leadership, and internally referenced leadership. Her new courses, based on internally referenced leadership, are offered in partnership with DePaul University.

Andrea received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College, her Masters of Education degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She lives in Oak Park, Illinois.
