Kelsey McKinney is an author and co-founder of Defector.com. She was a staff writer at Deadspin, a vertical of Gawker Media that was founded on the principle of saying what they mean and holding nothing back. It was eventually mauled through various mergers and acquisitions, when the new people in charge tried to shift those editorial values. In an inspiring show of comradery, the staff writers unanimously decided to walk out. Her new novel, “God Spare the Girls,” explores the daughters of a prominent megachurch pastor in North Texas as they discover a damning revelation about their father and reconcile with the emotional and personal fallout it brings.
