Indhira Udofia is doing the damn thing. Either that, or she’s a glutton for punishment. She came to divinity school on the false premise that she would be somebody’s pastor, but she always had some tension around the church — The models never quite clicked with her. While going through seminary school, she realized that this was the source of everything she’d been wrestling with regarding the messages being preached about gender, sexuality, and race. It was a site of harmful indoctrination. That started her academic journey. As she worked on her licensure, it was clear that she wanted to work around spiritual trauma. Still, she wanted it to be a practical resource, not just an academic circle jerk. She created a space to develop interventions and do one-on-one work, which became The Sanctuary of the Seeking. We talk about what social work entails, how to recognize when spiritual trauma has happened to you, and why it may be best to just burn the church down (the system, not the actual buildings).
