This is a transfer from 78's of a speech given at the UCL Chemistry Lab Dinner in 1937 by Prof Joji Sakurai, a leading Japanese chemist, in which he reminisces about being a postgraduate student at UCL in the 1880's under the supervision of Alexander Williamson. Sakurai provides first-person insight into the atmosphere of Victorian London and how the 'Choshu Five' helped transform the modern Japanese state.
