France Benoit – Sowing the Seeds of Resiliency

France Benoit is a farmer from North West Territories, who started Yellowknife’s largest urban farm last year when she moved her off-the-grid farm operations from outside of town, to an industrial area of downtown Yellowknife. She converted an unused parking lot into 5000 sq ft of market garden, where she grows an impressively diverse range of crops for local consumption. She sells her produce and value added products like cheese, tiramisu, and coleslaw at the Yellowknife Farmers Market.

In fact France played a major role in founding the Yellowknife Farmers market in 2013. Today, the farmer’s market supports a wide range of community programs, contributes close to $1 million to the local economy each year, and it has become a hub for locals to meet up and enjoy everything that Yellowknife farmers, bakers, artisans, and crafters has to offer.
