Today we will discuss the introduction to Saidiya Hartman's book Scenes of Subjection. Hartman creates this text to dive into her embodied generational trauma as a black woman. She examines the perpetual display of violence towards black bodies and the impact those images have on white people's empathy and black people's identity formation. Her method is to seek answers in untold stories that show moments of resistance and liveliness in black American culture.
Questions to consider: What is whiteness? How is it perpetrated by our curriculum? How do we read about black suffering? What is our role as educators?
