Everyday Conversations Regarding Mental Health

Veterans Volunteer Service - Littlehampton
The Veterans’ Volunteer Service (VVS) is a new incentive created by Gary Hart and Poppy Gold at The Rock, a BMMA-associated gymnasium and dojo in Littlehampton. The scheme aims to utilise the skills offered by military veterans who offer a wide range of skills from first aid, communications, engineering repairs to catering and self protection techniques.

‘The Rock Community Group’ has become the focal point of a series of local level incentives that are changing the town for the better. Under the umbrella 'Community Unity' we tackle issues such as food poverty, anti-social behaviour, youth violence and Military Veterans mental health.

“Fit and Feed” (held on the last Friday of each month) attracts 100’s of young local people.

The Fit and Feed initiative offers young people aged from 4 to 18 the opportunity to enjoy a fitness training session, a hot meal and a haircut – all for £1

Over 40% of the residents of Littlehampton live in food poverty so as you can imagine the need to fit and feed is huge.

Military veterans who are members of the Veterans Volunteer Service prepare food in the Littlehampton Baptist Church which is donated by local supermarkets and from local allotments. The food is then transported to British Military Martial Arts where the children exercise and are fed.

This was aired live on BBC South. Please see the link below.

YOUTH FOCUS GROUP

The Youth Focus Group (YFG) offers a unique educational experience to our local youngsters. By drawing on Military Veterans skill sets we provide practical learning opportunities and active, hands on participation in the form of modules.
The YFG is improving our local youth’s basic knowledge so that as they grow they will have a good grounding for daily life and resilience to the challenges it throws.
• Basic mechanics: changing a wheel, checking engine oil, changing brake pads and bike maintenance
• Learning about basic circuits, how to change a light bulb, fixing things rather than paying someone else to do it or worse, throwing something salvageable away.
• Learning how to make the most of food available, cooking on a budget, feeding a family, the benefits of batch cooking, nutrition and what different seasons have to offer in terms of food.
• Effective communication: The importance of speaking clearly, how to address an audience, learning the phonetic alphabet.
• Fitness: The importance of exercise and benefits it brings.
• Medical: Basic First Aid, how to use a defibrillator and where in town they are located.
The Youth Focus Group is a bespoke opportunity. The teenagers that attend are well known amongst the community for their anti-social behaviour. They are attending every session and remaining calm and engaged. These are the hardest to reach individuals who are strugg
