Using a combination of moldmaking and resin casting to custom fit action figures accessories.

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #414: Casting and Moldmaking When Making Action Figure Accessories

This week on the show, I’m discussing the making of a little part – a resin spacer for a Rocketeer figure’s rocketpack and some of the design consideration that go into making something like this, since to do it (at least by hand), it involves casting, mold making, and the use of numerous hand tools.

While this little piece is certainly not necessary – I could simply have glued it onto the Rocketeer’s back and made the pack nonremovable, this new figure I have been working on has been all about modularity – in other words, kind of like the GI Joe figured that inspired it.  Plus, each time I make a figure, I like to try to push the boundaries a little to try something new so each new figure wave is a step above the previous wave in terms of incorporating new techniques and other design features.

The point of making this spacer is to get rid of this gap and make something that can stick in the hole in the back.

Creating a clay reservoir for the resin to be poured into – in this case, a spare figure is being used as part as the base.

This is the piece that I popped off the casting figure.  I’m going to use it to create a little mold and then, more of these pieces that I will then glue onto the rocketpacks.
