That's Not How Science Works

42 episodes - English - Latest episode: over 3 years ago - ★★★★★ - 13 ratings

Join hosts Caitlin and Nicole as they snark about science in media and discuss why it's good, bad, or just plain ridiculous. TNHSW is using the CW TV show The Flash as a case study for bad science in media, and Caitlin and Nicole are skewering, I mean critiquing, the science in The Flash two episodes at a time. (Nicole would like to take this moment to offer to show the writing team of The Flash how to use Google should they stumble upon this podcast.) However, in between Caitlin suffering/Nicole schadenfreuding through The Flash, TNHSW also covers a variety of media genres, from movies to non-Flash TV shows to books. When Caitlin and Nicole can con them into it, TNHSW also features special guests who provide their real-life science and engineering expertise to the podcast. Basically, TNHSW is like a TED talk, if the presenters were unfiltered and had an unhealthy obsession with Barry Allen. Come for the sarcasm, stay for the cool science facts.

Episode 33: Clearly Dr. Smith Watches A Lot of TV

January 21, 2021 03:14 - 1 hour - 68.7 MB

We’re back! Caitlin finally edited the episode! In fact, you might say that this episode was Lost … on Caitlin’s Hard Drive. In this episode, Caitlin and Nicole are joined again by Caitlin’s long-suffering brother Ryan to discuss episodes 6 and 7 of Lost in Space. (Stars alive, when will we get through this series? How much more can I take? [sobs internally] ) Join us in this episode to discuss black holes, tar pits, and puzzling through what the heck the writers were trying to accomplish wi...

Episode 32: Netflix, Please Give Us TARS and Coop! | Interstellar (2014)

September 15, 2020 06:30 - 1 hour - 91.3 MB

It turns out that Caitlin and Nicole have multiple rocket scientist friends! Longtime friend of the podcast Space Nicole joins our hosts along with newtime friend of the podcast Grant to discuss the Nolan space behemoth, Interstellar. There is … a lot to unpack in this movie. Some of the science is surprisingly good, which makes sense considering that Nolan consulted with actual physicists during the production of the film (Flash writers, take notes). Some of the science is, well, odd, to sa...

Episode 31: Let's Torch That Peach! | The Core (2003)

June 08, 2020 05:11 - 1 hour - 85.1 MB

We have come to a movie that is apparently somewhat infamous in the scientific community for its terrible and ridiculous science: The Core. Patricia joins us once again to discuss how plausible it would be that the Earth’s core would stop spinning, that we could drill down to the core, and that we could restart it with nuclear weapons! If your guess was, wow, that sounds insanely implausible, ding ding ding, you got it right! If you thought, huh, that sounds like something that is a very l...

Episode 30: We're Just Standing Outside the Aliens' Planet with a Boombox | E1 & E2 of Another Life

May 25, 2020 22:14 - 1 hour - 70.8 MB

Well … this episode ended up being a bit of a mess for reasons that are explained therein. But you know what? It kind of fits because we’re covering episodes 1 and 2 of Another Life, and this show is a lot of a mess. We’re joined by our longtime podcast friend Space Nicole for the ride. In this episode we discuss the whole gamut of crazy science: - How dark matter isn’t a scary cloud - How pigeons navigate with but don’t produce infrasound - Why space helmets don’t have a retractable vis...

Episode 29: Henry Cavill Clearly Works out with Plutonium | Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)

May 13, 2020 23:38 - 1 hour - 92.6 MB

You mission, should you choose to accept it, is to listen to this podcast episode in which we discuss all of the ridiculous science in Mission Impossible: Fallout, a movie that seems to know as much about plutonium as I know about Black Sabbath — which is to say, basically nothing other than the fact that heavy metal is involved. And, of course, because we’re discussing plutonium, we are joined by longtime friend of the podcast and nuclear scientist, Madicken! Because this isn’t just the plu...

Episode 28: LOST … in Space! | E3-E5 of Lost in Space (2018) with Out of Contreks Podcast

April 27, 2020 12:00 - 1 hour - 64.1 MB

To the chagrin of everyone involved except, perhaps, Caitlin, we have returned to cover three more episodes of the Netflix prestige show Lost in Space. Caitlin and Nicole are also joined by Ryan and Brady from their sister podcast Out of Contreks to discuss all that … didn’t … happen in these three episodes. Believe me, there was a ton of ranting that I cut out, though some of that has been preserved in the outtakes on the blog post for this episode. Find the articles for the episode, as we...

Episode 26: No, COVID-19 Is Not an I Am Legend Situation | Zombie Viruses with Here's Johnny Podcast

March 29, 2020 18:55 - 1 hour - 71.8 MB

Welcome to the apocalypse, my friends. Wait, that sounds really bad with everyone currently in self isolation from COVID-19. We at That’s Not How Science Works don’t actually think we’re in the middle of a real apocalypse. The current pandemic will eventually pass, so hang in there! Wash your hands! Self isolate! Don’t touch your face! But in this episode we’re joined by Larry and Justin from the Here’s Johnny podcast to discuss zombies and viruses. You know, the classic fictional apocalyps...

Episode 25: Melting into Lava, Wicked Witch Style (Volcano (1997))

March 16, 2020 01:09 - 1 hour - 61.5 MB

Caitlin and Nicole are joined by Nicole’s friend Patricia, who is a geophysicist and studies volcanoes. (No, Patricia is not a vulcanologist. That’s a different thing. Nicole already made that mistake.) Per Patricia’s request, the group has gathered together to discuss the cheesy 1997 disaster movie, creatively named "Volcano”. Patricia is here to answer all of your lava-related questions? Can volcanoes just shoot out of the ground like daisies? How hard is it to outrun a lava flow? If you s...

Episode 24: Happy Birthday to Us! Q&A

March 03, 2020 00:24 - 49 minutes - 45.2 MB

Heeeeeeeeeeey, we haven’t forgotten about the fact that we have a podcast! In this episode Nicole and Caitlin celebrate our one-year anniversary, which was … some … time ago. But hey, it’s our birthday, so we get to celebrate it the way we want to, right? Right? RIGHT? At any rate, since lots of people voted in our “Which TV show should we watch next?” poll but didn’t actually send us any questions to answer for our anniversary celebration, Nicole and Caitlin discuss some questions that Cai...

Episode 23: Magic Science, Quite Literally | Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)

November 18, 2019 13:00 - 59 minutes - 54.3 MB

We were on an unannounced hiatus (let’s face it, all our hiatuses are unannounced), but we have returned! Caitlin and a (very congested) Nicole are back to talking about Marvel and, in particular, Spider-Man: Far from Home. The duo discuss the science of magic and just how far we are from real holograms. We also talk about the quite real and quite scary realm of deep fakes. What we do not discuss is what our superhero names would be, which in retrospect seems like a huge oversight. Nicole’s ...

September 03, 2019 05:27 - 1 hour - 60.1 MB

Alrighty, folks, we’ve come to the last of our alternative Flash shows: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. And we’re joined by the fabulous Nicole Sweeney of Snark Squad and Complexly! Woah, Caitlin and Nicole Prime are dazzled by her internet celebrity! Episode 20: Godzilla Is a Time Lord (Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019))

August 10, 2019 04:32 - 1 hour - 78.7 MB

The OG Godzilla team is back together to discuss Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the sequel to the 2014 Godzilla. And wow. Just wow. The plot is something. There is a lot to talk about in this episode. How you can’t just mix together animal sounds to make a magical bioacoustic that allows you to talk to giant monsters. How monsters can’t just give off magic radiation that will heal the planet. How Caitlin, Nicole, and Madicken should apparently start an ASMR podcast with electronic dance mus...

Episode 19: "Danger, Danger, Will Robinson!" Shouts Larry | E1 & E2 of Lost in Space (2018)

July 22, 2019 12:00 - 1 hour - 66 MB

Longtime TNHSW buddy Space Nicole is back to talk about Netflix’s reboot of Lost in Space. Will she challenge Nicole Prime to be Supreme Nicole of the Nerdy Podcasts? I guess you’ll just have to listen to find out! At any rate, there’s plenty of danger in the first two episodes of Netflix’s Lost in Space reboot and plenty more bad science, but the robot only says, “Danger, Will Robinson” once. ONCE. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? At any rate, back to science. Double Nicole and Caitlin discuss how you ...

Episode 18: It's Emotions All the Way Down | Inside Out (2014)

July 08, 2019 12:00 - 1 hour - 65.3 MB

Nicole and Caitlin are joined by Nicole’s friend Lynn, a neuroscientist who moved to San Francisco from Minnesota and who lived down the street from a bakery that probably sold broccoli pizza. No, seriously. This time Nicole isn’t just making stuff up for the sake of snarkiness. The TNHSW crew discusses the science of the brain and memory in the context of Inside Out. They also theorize about the brainy worldbuilding of the movie and its implications (as you do). Once again, if you want to ...

Episode 17: WE FINISHED SEASON ONE OF THE FLASH! | E23 & E24 of The Flash

June 28, 2019 04:30 - 1 hour - 79 MB

They doubted us. They told us we were crazy. They said it we would never be able to accomplish this, that it would be too much for any one podcast to handle alone. BUT WE DID IT. WE FINISHED SEASON ONE OF THE FLASH, HATERS. Who exactly are these haters, you ask? Doesn’t matter, moving on. In this episode, Caitlin and Nicole discuss the last episode of season one of The Flash and the first episode of season two of The Flash with their excellent friend Natalie! There is much ranting about sin...

Episode 16: As You Know, All Good Generals Quote Shakespeare | Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

June 10, 2019 12:00 - 1 hour - 76.9 MB

The internet, the final frontier. These are the voyages of That’s Not How Science Works. To expose strange new science. To fact check new movies and new TV shows. To boldly go where no podcaster has gone before! Yes, that’s right folks. We’ve come to the mother of all science fiction shows: Star Trek. Caitlin and Nicole are joined by their friend Amanda to discuss one of the underrated Star Trek movies, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. We discuss some of the less plausible science in ...

Episode 14: Is Caitlin Really a Doctor? What is Caitlin? | E19 & E20 of The Flash

May 13, 2019 12:00 - 1 hour - 78.8 MB

Michael took a break from packing up his cabin in Alaska in preparation to moving to the North Pole to discuss two more episodes of The Flash with us! First, we talk about finding bodies underground using sound and light (once again, FBI, Nicole says, “Hi”). We also discuss programmable matter and how a person cannot be made of it. Honestly, do the writers of The Flash know what a cell is? We then move into discussing applying stimulation to trigger lucid dreaming, listening to binaural beat...

Episode 13: Long Live Queen Blue | Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

May 02, 2019 23:26 - 1 hour - 78.2 MB

Caitlin and Nicole break from The Flash to talk about a movie that Nicole really loved and Caitlin really didn’t — Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom! Caitlin shows off her animal studies cred by discussing why you can’t just give a blood transfusion to a velociraptor from a T-rex … even if that velociraptor is by far the best character in the movie. Nicole and Caitlin also talk about the hazards of randomly shooting tranquilizers into a grown man, as well as the surprisingly good depiction of a...

Episode 12: Barry Is Afraid of Bees Deep in His Soul | E17 & E18 of The Flash

April 15, 2019 12:00 - 1 hour - 65.3 MB

Space Nicole is back to talk about The Flash, and she doesn’t even want to fight Nicole Prime for the title of “Supreme Nicole of the Nerdy Podcasts”! That is a huge relief to Nicole Prime. She did not want to rain fire and destruction on her friend. First, we talk about Mark Hamill, poison, and bombs. Yes, we are still referring to The Flash and not the 90s Batman animated series. Also, guess who did the research on bomb residue? (Dear FBI, Nicole says, “Hi.”) Then, Space Nicole tells us al...

Episode 11: So It Turns out Cisco Is an Alchemist | E15 & E16 of The Flash

April 03, 2019 03:39 - 56 minutes - 51.6 MB

We’re a big fan of siblings on this show, and this time Caitlin’s brother Ryan joins us to talk about our old, reliable, science-baddie, The Flash. Although, honestly, there’s not that much to talk about with respect to the science this week. No, you cannot travel back in time by running really fast. No, you can’t create a wand that harnesses the weather. No, you can’t create a gun that turns things into gold. We thought those things were obvious. Apparently we were wrong. Writers of The Fla...

Episode 10: Durable United Temperature and Climate Correction Hub Based in Orbit International | Geostorm (2017)

March 18, 2019 23:00 - 1 hour - 62.6 MB

Hey, it’s time for another break from The Flash! Caitlin and Nicole, who shall henceforth be known as “Nicole Prime,” welcome their friend also named Nicole, who shall henceforth be known as “Space Nicole,” and whom, although having intellect of the highest degree, is understood to serve below Nicole Prime in the TNHSW hierarchy. Should Space Nicole wish to supplant Nicole Prime as Supreme Nicole of the Nerdy Podcasts, Space Nicole must initiate a duel of strength, wits, or love of llamas (n...

Episode 9: Mirrors Are Not Photographs (How Is This Not Obvious) | E13 & E14 of The Flash

November 19, 2018 12:05 - 58 minutes - 53.3 MB

We welcome back special guest Madicken because this episode is about more nuclear nonsense in The Flash. Madicken and Caitlin (Nicole is absent due to sad, boring work reasons) discuss how hmm, yeah, no, combustion is not the same thing as a nuclear explosion. Madicken and Caitlin also rant about Nicole’s favorite ridiculous science moment in The Flash: Cisco making a three-dimensional hologram based on the night Barry’s mom died (and only that night) imprinting on an old silver mirror becau...

Episode 8: You Are Mashed Potatoes | E11 & E12 of The Flash

October 29, 2018 11:00 - 1 hour - 69.5 MB

Okay, we were on a hiatus due to boring work reasons/Caitlin being (kinda) useless when it comes to editing, but we are back, baby! We discuss the next two episodes of The Flash with Michael, who has returned from his off-the-grid life in [redacted] for reasons due to [redacted]. We start by talking about cochlear implants and tinnitus, which Nicole and Michael discovered that they both have! You’d think being siblings they would’ve figured that out before this episode! We also discuss reson...

Episode 7: Fire and Ice Ice Baby | E9 & E10 of The Flash

October 22, 2018 11:00 - 59 minutes - 54.2 MB

Our guest this episode is not a scientist. In fact, you might say that he’s the reverse. We talk about the next two episodes of The Flash with Nicole’s brother, who is studying economics but who Nicole and Caitlin, in their desperation for guests, were able to con into appearing on this podcast. First, we discuss tachyons and how it’s pretty difficult to build a device with particles that we haven’t proven exist. Then the ice man cometh. That’s right, folks—it’s Captain Cold, part 2! And thi...

Episode 6: If You Say Quantum Three Times, Do You Summon Michelle Pfeiffer? | Ant-Man and the Wasp

October 15, 2018 11:00 - 56 minutes - 52 MB

Get excited, it’s the quantum episode! If we’ve learned anything from Ant-Man and the Wasp it’s that putting “quantum” in front of a word makes it “extra sciencey.” We talk about the quantum science in Ant-Man and the Wasp and how, weirdly, despite it being so far from reality, it doesn’t bother us all that much. We also discuss the bizarre density of the Ant-Man and Wasp suits and the even more bizarre fact that Scott Lang can somehow afford to live by himself in San Francisco. Articles: ...

Episode 5: But What Does Atomic Breath Smell Like? | Godzilla (2014)

October 08, 2018 11:00 - 1 hour - 56.9 MB

Let them fight! That’s right folks, this week we are covering the 2014 version of Godzilla. Even more exciting, we feature an actual, real-life nuclear engineer to discuss all of the problems with nuclear power plants, nuclear bombs, nuclear radiation, nuclear banana bread, nuclear breath, nuclear sense of smell, and nuclear kung fu in the movie. Okay, it’s possible we may have made some of those up. There are so many problems with the science in this movie that it’s hard to keep track. You ...

Episode 4: Oliver Is Right and Barry Is Wrong | E7 & E8 of The Flash

October 04, 2018 20:08 - 1 hour - 57.3 MB

We open on an electricity vampire. What? You haven’t heard of electricity vampires? They’re the black sheep of the Dracula family, obviously. We talk about how current and voltage can be used to kill a person. (NSA, Nicole promises that this is all theoretical science. Please, don’t put her on a no-fly list.) And then it’s the crossover episode of Flash v. Arrow! We know, you’re all shocked. In all fairness, this episode is way better than the Batman v. Superman movie, except for some color ...

Episode 3: Make Up Some Sciency Stuff to Throw Them Off | E5 & E6 of The Flash

October 04, 2018 18:22 - 1 hour - 62.1 MB

Bomb Chicka Wow Wow! We first discuss bombs and how they cause damage through overpressure. Cool fact: When the writing team of The Flash writes down a number, there is a 92% chance they made it up. Then we discuss the physics of fighting and go through a bunch of calculations related to supersonic punches. Hey! Don’t tune me out now! It’s fuuuuun math about puuunches, okay, listeners. Fun math. Articles: Here’s the Wired article about running up buildings A great article by FEMA about ov...

Episode 2: Sure, Sure, Sure, Let's Go with That | E3 & E4 of The Flash

September 19, 2018 03:35 - 55 minutes - 50.8 MB

The four states of matter are solid, liquid, gas, and DNA that can sublimate into a gas, right? We discuss the probability that a person could turn himself into a gas cloud and how difficult it would be to cure hydrogen cyanide poison. Then we segue into talking about Nicole’s favorite villain, Captain Cold, and what we like to call (and this is the scientific term) “absolute zero nonsense.” Articles: What Happens At Absolute Zero Weirdly, you can reach negative temperature that are "cold...

Episode 1: That's Not How Stem Cells Work | E1 & E2 of The Flash

September 19, 2018 03:07 - 1 hour - 55.7 MB

It’s the origin story of our favorite red speedster, the Flash! First, we talk about the real-life effects of lightning strikes on the body (spoiler: you probably won’t get superpowers, but you might get psychic powers?) and tornadogenesis. Then we discuss the fascinating field of therapeutic organ cloning, as well as the less fascinating field of employment contracts. Article links: Hit by Lightning: Tales from Survivors How Tornadoes Form and Why They're So Unpredictable Therapeutic Cl...
