Episode 36: When Racism Is Normalized

Imagine growing up in a society in which racism not only exists but is accepted and normalized. Unfortunately Bibi, our guest this week, doesn't have to imagine because this was her reality growing up in Italy. Listen as the first known Italian born Black Woman details the fact she didn't even know she was black until she was 8 years old, her first experiences encountering racism in Italy and how a wave of White Nationalism caused Italians she grew up with to refuse to continue being friends with Bibi simply because she is Black. Bibi then explains how living in Australia has been the complete opposite experience and how it has taken a while getting used to not constantly being bombarded with racism. If all of that wasn't enough, Bibi details witnessing an actual shootout the first and only time she visited the United States! Incredible perspective that is another glimpse into how similar and different the Black Experience is around the world!
