Episode 35: Photos, Education & The Black Experience

Society has led us to believe the Black Experience is finite and can only be certain ways, yet all you have to do is speak to Black Folk to realize our experiences are similar to an onion; full of various layers. Alan Rolette is a Military Veteran, Former Educator and the owner of River Horse Photography. Listen as Alan details being a child growing up from humble beginnings and how years of being picked on and abused changed once he hit a significant growth spurt. How did Alan handle his anger from years of bullying when he was Younger, and how was he able to channel those feelings into his Photography that he does today? Alan also delves deep into misconceptions about Black Children that many Educators had when he was a student, and how those same misconceptions existed even when he became an Educator himself. The conversation shifts to a very heartfelt explanation of the importance of preserving memories through Photography and how Covid 19 and its effect on "Gig Work" may ultimately cause Alan to close his business at the end of 2021. Like an Onion this conversation is multi layered yet necessary. Enjoy!
