In this podcast, Dr. Shaw continues to review the "Ten Governing Principles" for effective communication with children that are featured in her brand new book for parents. Several weeks ago on an earlier podcast, Dr. Shaw first introduced and outlined her concept for the new parenting guide that she created.  That book is now out... it's called I Like How You Speak to Me... A Parent's Guide to Effective Communication with Children, and the opening section of that book lists Dr. Shaw's Ten Governing Principles for effective communication. Dr. Shaw promised that for ten straight podcasts she would delve into a discussion of one guiding principle per episode. This is the fifth of those, and the guiding principle she discusses here is TO BE CONSISTENT AND HAVE FOLLOW-THROUGH. She provides a great illustration of how this might come up for parents by describing a child acting out at bedtime.  As with many of the other governing principles that Dr. Shaw espouses, this one involves making prior agreements with your child. The secret to this aspect of effective communication is to front-load an agreement with your child including the consequences of breaking that agreement, and by remaining consistent and modeling consistency.
