In this podcast, Dr. Shaw continues to review the "Ten Governing Principles" for effective communication with children that are featured in her brand new book for parents.  On Podcast  Episode 18 in this series, Dr. Shaw first introduced and outlined her concept for a new parenting guide that she was writing.  That book is now out... it's called I Like How You Speak to Me... A Parent's Guide to Effective Communication with Children, and the opening section of that book lists Dr. Shaw's Ten Governing Principles for effective communication.  Dr. Shaw promised that for ten straight podcasts she would delve into a discussion of one guiding principle per episode, and this is the fourth of those, and the guiding principle she discusses here is TO BE DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE.  She provides some great illustrations of how this comes up in real life communication, and she is careful to encourage parents to not "baby" their child and to also not speak over their heads... it has to be done just right.  It's a fascinating element of parent-child communication, and that's what this podcast is focused on.
