In this episode, Dr. Shaw turns her attention to the crisis in schools here in 2023 wherein social skills, manners and basic behavioral standards are lacking, even among some of the youngest students.   Many teachers blame this phenomenon on the fallout of the COVID pandemic, and in all likelihood, the disruption in education caused by the events of 2020 and 2021 are to blame... but there is also a solution to the problem and that is for teachers and parents to set the stage differently for the education of children today.  Here, Dr. Shaw discusses her own lifelong approach to the classroom which puts social-emotional learning first.  Her philosophy is that if children are not in a comfortable, trusting and respectful environment from the start, then there's no foundation on which to teach reading, writing and math.  Dr. Shaw practiced this approach long before there was a pandemic disruption, so her words of wisdom in this podcast are truly valuable.
