The Author

Wayne Rankin is an American author from Texas in the US. He’s a retired Master Sergeant from the US Airforce where he served for twenty years. Wayne has been married to his wife Margaret for some considerable time and he refers to her as his rock, the person who understands him better than himself. It’s nearly always that way, your partner knowing you more than you are knowing yourself.

When he left the Air Force Wayne went on to earn a Master’s degree in Human Resources and Procurement as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Organisational Management from Colorado Christian University where he was given the honorary title of Magna Cum Laude (with great praise). 

With military life behind him so to speak he went to Misawa Air Base in Japan where he worked as the logistic Manager for Lockheed Martin. Several years later he returned to the US and began working for ITT Systems Division, Lear Siegler, EG &G and URS before starting his own business in 2005 LOGMET LLC. Today he’s the CEO of the company he founded with 400 employees and a gross annual turnover of $20 million.

When you chat to Wayne you get the clear feeling, he’s a man that can best be described as an opportunist, willing to take chances with all the ventures he has carried out in his life, for him setbacks are minor adjustments to be learnt from. He might be a successful man in the civilian world but like many retired military personnel you can’t take the military out of them it will always be there in the background. Wayne has come from nowhere to somewhere with all the bumps along the way and this journey of his underpins the message in his book Wayne, the Nerd from Arizona, for it is about his early days growing up as a child through to adulthood simply told through the eyes of the character Wayne.

The Book

This children’s book with its idealistic illustrations for me is perfect for 5–8-year-olds to look at and read depending on their reading ability, every child I know has varying degrees of reading skills so let’s include everyone here in the age range I’ve mentioned. 

The story is based on the character Wayne, and the kids that make up the nerd gang. There are relationships with themselves and those around them in their peer group. It’s a story of how Wayne and his nerd gang transgress from caterpillars to beautiful butterflies, spotty kids to young people with promising futures. The plot is built around kids that attend military school on the bases their parents are posted to. Why the Military background you might ask well that’s simple, the author himself as I’ve already said comes from a military backdrop and he’s merely drawing on his own experiences. Wayne the author is Wayne the character. Wayne in the book is a character that finds it hard to adapt to constant changes in his life as he follows his father around the world. Friendships for him don’t come easy.  

It’s a thrilling book for young minds!
