The Author

Dr Eric Kolb was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in the USA , he went to Ohio and Capella Universities, moved to Germany in 1994, worked as a street performer, circus performer, as an actor and comedian. He presently lives in Obernkirchen a small town near Hannover. Germany.

Muscular Dystrophy is a hereditary condition marked by weakening and wasting of the muscles, a life changing game plan if you are unfortunate enough like Eric to be diagnosed with this debilitating disease at such a young age. When he began working with the Clown Doctors, the first group of clowns to perform in Children’s Hospitals in Germany, his interest in child psychology began. Humour has been at the heart of Eric’s life, and he often describes it as the best medicine particularly when the chronic pain gets unbearable as the condition continues to ravage his body. Understanding and coming to terms with the choices available to him in life were going to be restrictive and that his future was destined for a wheelchair rather than a spotlight, Eric obtained a M.Sc. in Psychological Counselling. Amalgamating his skills as a performing artist, Eric became a licensed mental health practitioner in Germany, specializing in child development and behaviour. However, this also due to his deteriorating condition became too much of a challenge. Eric turned his attention to gaining a Ph.D. in General Psychology and has been working as an independent researcher ever since and recently as a writer when his hands allow him to type on the keyboard.

I asked Dr Kolb for a quirky story, and this is what he sent me.

When I heard God Laugh.

I stated previously that I was given two years to live when I was first diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. That, of course, crushed me. It Crushed my heart, body, mind and soul. During all that unexpected stress, I had a flashback memory at a church summer camp. Being from a strong Christian family and having a famous father, I did not get much attention at such camps. The church leaders spent all their time with kids who needed their help and left me to fill up 1000 water balloons for all the other kids to play with while I and a few other kids were left to clean the kitchen after lunch. On the last evening, just before the typical alter call, they brought an older kid up on stage. He was the coolest kid there. He played guitar in the band, had a tattoo, and long hair. Everyone thought he was awesome. He went up on stage and told the story about how he tried to kill himself by drinking laundry detergent only a couple of months previously, but now he’s given his life to Christ. While everyone cheered, and all the girls wanted to hug him, and all the church leaders wanted to give him a high five; I couldn’t help to think “Idiot, do you know how much detergent you need to swallow before it will kill you and how long it would take?” The truth was this kid was clearly not on track, he had bad school grades and led a sinful life, no accomplishments to speak of, yet he was the cool one, the hero of the youth group! So, with that in mind we were all sent out to go off alone and think about if we wanted to accept Christ into our lives. I had done that I least twenty times in the past and concluded you only have to ask God once. So, I wanted to talk to God about this. I asked God,” why is my life so perfect, what kind of testimony will I ever be able to give? When will I ever be able to tell how God got me through an impossible problem when I never have any problems?” That’s when I heard God laugh and say, do not worry; you’ll get your chance.

I Think we can clearly see a connection now between Dr Kolb’s Theological concepts and his Psychology thoughts; hence his writings and his books so let’s turn to the book.

The Book

The Human Mind: A psychological View of Theological Concepts

In, The Human Mind: A Psychological View of Theological Concepts, Dr Kolb compares and contrasts the scientific understanding of the human mind with that of the teaching of the Bible. In some cases, he sees that these two perspective viewpoints are similar, such as in various aspects of child development. However, where positive psychology claims that the power to induce change lies within the individual, the Bible on the other hand teaches that we can do nothing apart from Christ. Erics book starts off with the concepts of belief, upon which the mind develops. Both Christian Theology and scientific psychology agree that one’s beliefs serve as a lens through which reality is viewed, and that humans mainly choose what they want to believe. As such, an individuals’ core beliefs serve as the foundation upon which their mind develops. Dr Kolb’s book in theory outlines the numerous development processes of the human mind, beginning with the blank state, through sensory integration and learning through to the concept of self-awareness and the theory of mind upon which a person’s identity is formed. Finally, after corroborating the relationship between mind and behaviour, Dr Kolb closes the book with the contemplation of the nature and development of the mind of Jesus of Nazareth.

This book is an extraordinary book well written, thank you Eric. Here’s our video chat:

The Psychology of God

This book was Dr Kolb’s first book and is about a scientific study of various aspects of human and the behaviour taken from both a theological and psychological perspective and serves as an introduction to the four books that follow. The Human Mind, which is the topic of today’s discussion, is the first book of this series. The Human Soul is currently being published and will be available shortly. The Human Heart is currently in the making, and The Human Body will complete the series. Kolb’s books point out that modern scientific psychology has discovered ancient references to the heart, body, mind and soul that form the very being of man, but science and theology still have contrasting viewpoints around the psychology of God.
