The Author

Sean Poage is a historical fiction writer from Portland, Maine in the U.S. Travelling the world to see history up close for Sean, has been a long-time privilege. He grew up moving around all over the place with his family. Leaving High school with no career path or any idea of what he wanted to do in life, just like so many of us at that age, he joined the US Army. He served in the Military Police, he worked in law enforcement, field training and undercover drug investigations. His duties took him to Germany, Honduras, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Cuba just to name a few of the places. After serving several years he returned to civvy street working as a police officer in Florida as a patrolman, SWAT officer and gang investigator. Like the army these roles were physically challenging and after obtaining a BSc in Computer Networking Sean quietly transferred to the world of computing and is proud to call himself a computer geek or nerd. A return as an Army Reserve saw him back in Iraq, the second time as an investigator and the last time as a trainer supporting the Iraqi Police, Federal Police and Army in handling bomb scene investigations especially around IEDs.

Today Sean’s life is a little quieter, the only dangerous outings he and his family embark on are hiking and scuba diving, but the travelling in pursuit of historical facts and stories are still top of Sean’s adventures and probably will be for the rest of his life. Once a historical buff always a historical buff and as long as Sean is still alive the British King Arthur will carry on reigning.

The Books

The Retreat to Avalon (The Arthurian Age Book One)

Cover: Dmiitry Yahkovsky
Interior Sketches: Luka Cacic

This book is quite a chunky book, so for those of you who love getting your teeth into a good-size book that’s going to take you on a historical journey starting in the 5th century AD then sit up and pay attention. The main story is masterfully told across twelve chapters, the historical detail, facts and what I would refer to as drawings as opposed to illustrations are meticulous, punctilious and painstaking researched all for the full effect of authenticity as you would expect from a book of this quality. However, stripping away the historical ingredients there lies within a phenomal story as I’ve already described as magisterially told that reveals the tale of Britain’s struggles with unmerciful invaders of that period ending, and an epoch of prosperity and tranquillity looming. Rome’s hold on its empire is showing signs of crumbling due to the constant onslaught of Barbarian attacks, internal corruption and civil war. Desperate for allies the last of the great Roman emperors looks to Britain for support particularly from the High King Arthur. Arthur believes the coming war is inevitable, but many within the realm are opposed to a fresh war, dissent and betrayal simmer beneath the surface of an already fractious allegiance between allies within the British kingdom, which could easily put Arthur’s grip on power in peril to the point of becoming undone, something Britain’s foes would easily exploit for their own advantage. Gawain son of Gwyar, a chieftain in northern Britain, is a young warrior craving fame and is swept up in Arthur’s wake as the king raises an army. Has Gawain bitten off more than he can chew by taking his people into one of the greatest battles of a generation? Most of us know that Gawain was known as the Green Knight in Arthurian legend and was one of the noble knights of King Arthur’s realm that sat at the round table.

The retreat to Avalon is the exciting beginning of the historical fiction trilogy The Arthurian Age, introducing readers to the origins of King Arthur and the world he lived and fought for.

The book also gives space to reference points, source information and backgrounds to the characters, who they were, their positions and the roles they had in the Arthurian Legends of King Arthur.

The Strife of Camlann (The Arthurian Age Book Two)

Cover and Interior Sketches: Dmitry Yahkovsky

Another book packed full of history, drama, battles, thrills, tension with lots of gallant heroism. The cover gives you an idea as to what to expect. Again, it’s a fair size book clearly Sean Poage doesn’t do slim versions. The epic story is written across seventeen gripping chapters and like in the first book there are parts of the book given over to reference points for you to educate your mind about how life was back then, plus a little bit of background to the characters and the sources he has drawn upon to compile this fabled blockbuster of a series. But to give you a quick heads up to set the scene for you King Arthur’s men have returned to Britain to keep the peace between the fractious allies across the land. Gawain is war fatigued he wants to start a family and forget about the war, but he carries a heavy burden, an oath to maintain a terrible lie, is it a lie though? Looming Conflicts continue to erode what peace there is in the land. The course of history, the future of the Britons will be determined at Camlann.

Three Wicked Revelations

(The Arthurian Age Book Three- Coming shortly)

The Storyline to this book I’m sure is going to be equally as powerful, if not more with perhaps closure to some of the events that have taken place in the previous two books. Book 3 is a prequal to book 1. Book 1 starts when Arthur is already king and preparing for war in Gaul. Book 3 goes back to the beginning of Britain’s independence from Rome and through Arthur’s life up to book 1. I understand that Sean had to do it this way because of an unexpected publisher’s request to make the series a trilogy. Some of the background details in books 1 and 2 are explained in book 3.

Hengist is a novella coming out in November 2023. It’s based on the thesis by JRR Tolkien that the first Anglo- Saxon king in Britain, Hengist, is the same person described in Beowwulf and The Finnsburgh Fragment. Sean builds a story around his thesis to show hoe Hengist may have come to Britain in the first place, and how it led to conflict with Vortigern and Arthur.

Truly these books are an unparalleled read.
