Twitch uncovers 7.5 million viewing bots

Twitch Streamers listen up! Twitch has removed 7.5 million of those annoying bots that make their way into your chats!

From CNET.

Follow-bots are used to improve a streamer's follow numbers while viewer-bots inflate the current number of viewers watching a stream, which can help boost a channel's discovery chances on the platform. Twitch says it will enforce its terms of service on these bot accounts, including taking legal action if necessary, which may lower a channel's follower and viewer counts in the coming days.

Machine learning helped sniff out these bots, and Twitch says it will improve operations going forward. While some streamers looking to boost their numbers may purchase these viewer- and follower-bots in the lesser-known places on the internet, there are users who use these bots to troll certain channels. A stream could find their chat flooded with spam by the bots and this could lead to other issues if the channel gets reported for a TOS violation.

Interestingly enough xQc lost 2 million followers from the ban.

Matty - Have you ever had the misfortune of getting botted?

Twitch loses lawsuit to banned streamer PhantomL0rd

Former Twitch streamer James ‘PhantomL0rd’ Vargas has won his lawsuit against the site for banning him back in 2016, but he’s received much less than the $35 million settlement he was originally seeking.

Vargas was banned by Twitch all the way back in 2016 during the site’s crackdown on CSGO gambling streams. Twitch said at the time of the ban that he was misleading viewers in regards to skin gambling in CSGO.

The streamer wholeheartedly denied all of it and sued Twitch, seeking $35 million in damages for removing him from the platform for “unsubstantiated, false accusations,” with the court battle beginning in 2019.

In the end, PhantomL0rd won his lawsuit on all counts, receiving $20,720.34 in total damages from Twitch according to court documents — a win for sure, though not exactly the $35 million he was originally going for.

However, based on his reaction to the verdict on Twitter, monetary gains don’t seem to have been his main reason for the lawsuit: Sending a message was.

“I WON! Twitch LOST EVERYTHING, including the fraud claim against me for the CSGOShuffle allegations!” PhantomL0rd posted on Twitter. “This is a win for ALL streamers! Twitch can’t bully, lie & treat streamers unfairly the way they have for years!”

Foxx - Do you think this will lead to more streamers pursuing Twitch legally?

https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/tiny-twitch-streamer-makes-over-85000-after-raid-by-crypto-enthusiasts-1555258/

2 things near and dear to my heart. Streaming and crypto.

A small Twitch streamer who was playing guitar to a handful of people had one of the craziest nights of his life after being donated over $85,000 when crypto fanatics showed up in his chat.

going into his stream on April 15, Cameron Ferguson had no idea he would have one of the most successful nights anyone has ever had on Twitch, and it’s because he was noticed by Cobie, who has the Twitter handle CryptoCobain, and hosts a show called Up Early.

During Cobie’s stream, he was looking for smaller streamers and stumbled across Cameron Ferguson playing music for a few people and decided to raid him.

That’s not all that happened, however, he also instructed the streamer to create a Twitter account, get on the cryptocurrency app Blockfolio and put his address in his bio so others could donate to him.

From there, the money just started to roll in and completely change the tiny streamer’s life.

Stump - Pretty crazy and generous of these crypto streamers and fans to do this for this streamer.

OBS gets native support for Nvidia’s excellent noise-canceling tech

Streamers Keep listening. We have some great news coming from Nvidia as their noise cancelling tech is getting some integration into OBS.

From the Verge

Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), the go-to software for streamers, is getting native support for Nvidia’s excellent noise-removal technology, the graphics card manufacturer announced today. Although it was previously possible to get the same effect by combining OBS with Nvidia’s Broadcast software, you’ll now be able to adjust the background noise-removal feature directly from within OBS. It’s currently available with the beta version of OBS Studio 27 and will be coming in a full release soon.

According to Nvidia’s announcement, you’ll need to download its Broadcast Audio Effects SDK to get the feature to work with the new beta version of OBS Studio 27. However, when the latest version of OBS leave beta, Nvidia says the feature will be fully integrated and won’t require a separate download. You’ll also need Nvidia’s latest game-ready driver.

The new integration arrived with Nvidia’s latest game-ready driver, which also adds support for Mortal Shell’s RTX update as well as six new G-Sync-compatible displays.

Matty - This is a great tool for people with audio issues. What other integrations would you like to see with obs?

Microsoft to Buy Speech-Recognition Company Nuance for $19.7 Billion

Could Voice commands  be the next big upgrade for Microsoft Operating systems??

From Variety

Microsoft said it clinched a deal to buy Nuance Communications, a pioneering voice-recognition tech company, in an all-cash transaction valued at $19.7 billion, inclusive of Nuance’s net debt.

It would be the second-biggest acquisition for Microsoft behind its $26 billion deal for LinkedIn in 2016. Microsoft expects the deal to close in calendar year 2021, subject to approval by Nuance’s shareholders, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

Microsoft had created its own voice-based virtual assistant, Cortana. Two years ago, the tech giant announced it would no longer try to compete with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant in the consumer market, and instead shifted to integrate Cortana into its suite of productivity applications.

Microsoft says the deal will accelerate its ability to provide cloud-based solutions specifically to the healthcare industry. “Nuance provides the AI layer at the healthcare point of delivery and is a pioneer in the real-world application of enterprise AI,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a statement. “AI is technology’s most important priority, and healthcare is its most urgent application.”

Nuance’s software formed the basis of Apple’s Siri voice assistant, which debuted in 2011, before Apple brought development of the technology in-house.

Stump - Where do you think they will take this tech next after medicine?

Epic Games Store expands to carry Windows apps like Brave and Discord

Epic is adding five new PC apps to its Epic Games Store launcher today, in a fresh bid to offer more than just games. Indie game store Itch.io is arriving on Epic Games Store today, alongside open-source browser Brave, streaming radio app iHeartRadio, 3D model tool KenShape, and open-source painting app Krita. These are Epic Games Store’s first new PC apps since Spotify launched in December.

Epic Games is promising to add more PC apps in the future, including communications app Discord. There’s even a new section in the Epic Games Store dedicated to PC apps, so it’s clear Epic has ambitions to run its own Windows store here. That’s not entirely surprising, as Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has long called for open app models and stores on Windows. Microsoft’s own Windows store has failed to become a popular location for the vast amount of Windows apps and games, and popular apps like Adobe Creative Suite, Chrome, Discord, and Zoom aren’t even in the Windows app store.

This approach is also what Epic Games wants to see elsewhere with app stores. Sweeney was impressed by Microsoft’s new open model for Windows and HoloLens 2 a couple of years ago, but Apple is firmly in Epic’s sights right now.

Epic’s antitrust trial with Apple begins on May 3rd, after Epic sued Apple for removing Fortnite from the App Store. Epic added a direct payment system to the battle royale shooter that avoided Apple’s 30 percent cut of revenues, which violated Apple’s policies.

Foxx - Do you see this becoming any kind of a threat to the apple store and do you think we will  see Epic move into the mobile space w this?

Powerpuff Girls First-Look Image Revealed for Live-Action CW Series

CW has revealed details about their upcoming live action sequel of The powerpuff girls.

From IGN

The show will still include the characters in their "official" Powerpuff uniforms, but The CW says we should only expect to see the costumes in flashbacks to their teenage years. The show will primarily focus on the characters as, "disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting."

Starring Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup.

Donald Faison will appear in the show as Professor Drake Utonium, along with Nicholas Podany as Jojo Mondel and Robyn Lively as Sara Bellum.

The live-action version of the popular Cartoon Network show began development last summer, with producers who previously worked on the Veronica Mars revival, iZombie, and Juno. The CW ordered a pilot for the series earlier this year.

Matty -Did you watch the original? Do you think you will get into this one?

The Batman: TV Spin-Off Will Reportedly Focus on James Gordon

Personally I loved the last Batman tv show that focused on Detective Gordon so I am HYPED for this one.

The upcoming HBO Max Batman spinoff series, Gotham PD, will reportedly focus on James Gordon, forgoing using the Gotham Central comic by Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker as inspiration.

Brubaker, who co-wrote the 2002 police procedural comic Gotham Central, recently appeared on Kevin Smith’s Fatman Beyond podcast and shared what he knew about the upcoming HBO Max series, Batman News reports.

“I was like ‘maybe they’re really going to make Gotham Central this time,’ and so I reached out to a producer who works for Matt Reeves and he says, ‘no, that’s not really Gotham Central.’” Brubaker said. “They’re making sure that they don’t call it Gotham Central and it’s more of a spinoff from the movie. It’s like the James Gordon show.”

Brubaker’s comments suggest that Jeffrey Wright, who plays Gordon in Reeves’ Batman, may play the officer again in the spinoff series, but no casting information has been announced as of yet.

Further details about the Gotham PD spinoff remain scarce, with no release date announced, and Reeves’ Batman film suffering delays due to COVID-19.

Foxx - What are you looking for from an HBO Batman spinoff?

Spider-Man Will Finally Come to Disney Plus With New Deal - But After Netflix

Nerds can rejoice! Spiderman is coming to Disney plus

From IGN

Though Disney Plus has been the streaming home for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and entries from other Marvel series like X-Men and Fantastic Four, Sony's Spider-Man movies have been a conspicuous absence from the platform's library — until now. Future Spider-Man titles, along with other Sony films, will join Disney's library in the future, as Disney and Sony have reached a new licensing agreement.

The deal comes almost two weeks after Sony Pictures and Netflix have signed a multi-year contract to give Netflix first-run rights to Sony films after they play in theaters. The new Disney deal covers the period after that, meaning theatrical releases from 2022 to 2026 will head to Disney's streaming services and other television networks (FX, ABC, etc) after they leave Netflix. The package only covers U.S. markets.

Stump - The landscape is changing on how these companies are cooperating. Do you think we will eventually see some of these services fold into one another?
