Have you ever been judged or bullied because of the color of your skin? Made fun of because you are "too light" or "too dark"? "Skin color matters because we are a visual species and we respond to one another based on the way we physically present. In today's society, skin color has become a loaded signifier of identity and value". In today's episode, we're talking about Colorism. What is Colorism? Colorism is prejudice or discrimination against individuals based on their skin tone, usually from the same ethnic or racial group. In a country deeply rooted in racism, dark skin is demonized and white skin is praised. Though super common in the black community, colorism is also rampant in Latin America, East, and Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and Africa. Unfortunately, colorism is prominent in the black, Asian, and Hispanic communities. There have been so many "Team Light Skinned" vs. "Team Dark Skinned" rivalries, but no color or shade of skin is more attractive or deserving than the next.
