Tonight's special guest is Dr Robert T Muller, Professor of Psychology, York University, Toronto, Ontario, author on trauma and mental health, a Fellow at the International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation and founding editor of an online magazine, The Trauma & Mental Health Report, that's now visited by over 100,000 readers a year. His new book, 'Trauma and the Struggle to Open Up' describes how to use attachment and trauma therapy in the psychotherapy relationship to help clients find self-understanding and healing from trauma. Dr. Muller provides the steps needed to build and maintain a strong therapist-client relationship – one that helps bring recovery and growth. "My interest in trauma work stemmed from my past, my family’s history," Rob reports. "My parents were school-age children during the Holocaust." Rob says they survived only because of a combination of luck and the goodwill of non-Jewish family members, who took great personal risks to help." He explains that the legacy of the Holocaust for him was the loss of childhood. "It’s hard for me to imagine the terror my parents felt as children—terror so many others felt as well." Dr. Muller admits that these tories occupy a large space in his mind, and have had a large impact on his life. An award winning author, he's also served as lead investigator on several multi-site programs to treat interpersonal trauma, and has lectured internationally.
