Hello Language Lovers! Thank you for joining me for this episode of Speaking Tongues- the podcast in conversation with multilinguals. My guest today is Meri Maroutian, an English teacher and the creator of The Non Native Speaker and this week, we’re talking about two of her languages, Armenian and English.

Meri talks to us about the advantages and disadvantages of traveling the world as she grew up and how the different places she landed with her family shaped her view of communicating. We talk about staying connected to her Armenian roots and the language despite not having grown up in Armenia. She tells us about the many Armenians living in the diaspora and some ways that millions of them are able to keep their customs and traditions close to their hearts and we learn some very basic Armenian phrases including one of the cutest greetings I’ve ever heard!!  Meri is working tirelessly to help eliminate the stigma that non-native English teachers face and we learn what she’s doing to fight back and change the narrative around native speakerism.

Huge thank you to Meri for this fun conversation and for all the work you do in language.
