63. Speaking Australian English

Hello Language Lovers! Thank you for joining me for this episode of Speaking Tongues- the podcast in conversation with multilinguals.  Today, I’m speaking with Penny & Bec from the Language Chats Podcast and we are talking about Australian English.

I absolutely love talking about every language but talking about English spoken in different parts of the world is always so much fun for me because I also love to learn about how my own native language is expressed in different parts of the world! So I knew that when I was ready to talk about Aussie English, I had to come to my favorite Australian language podcasters for a chat!

In this episode we talk about how second languages taught in Victoria tend to be Asian languages like Mandarin and Japanese. We talk about how multilingualism is expressed among multicultural communities throughout the country and how the prevalence of these communities can inform the second language offerings in schools. When it comes to English, we talk about the informal nature of Australian culture and language, accents around Australia and how immigration has created a mix of heritage language and English. We also discuss indigineous Australians and the efforts that are taken and can be taken regarding acknowledging the heritage of first peoples. And of course we have dispel some popular stereotypes like.. Do Australians even put shrimps on a barbie? Where did that even come from?
