As someone whose fought his way up from rock-bottom, few people know more about positive transformation than Gary “Boatsy” Clarke. From positive, nurturing beginnings, Gary saw his life spiral downwards when he became involved in the world of football hooliganism in the 1980’s, resulting in a prison sentence.

For many, it would have spelled the sad end to a once promising life, but as Gary discusses with Paul this week, it was merely the beginning of an entirely new chapter…

KEY TAKEAWAYS

When we perceive ourselves to be the victims of bullying, we often attempt to regain that control through the same, unfortunate channels.
Many gravitate towards gang culture as a way of feeling some sense of camaraderie and support. Especially in deprived areas, this mutual connection can sometimes be the only form of understanding.
The human spirit requires re-grounding sometimes. For Gary, the experience of prison was a powerful reset switch that caused an entire life reboot.
Life is a constant series of choices. We can’t possibly hope to make the right choice each time, but the important thing is to learn the lesson when the choice turns out to be a poor one.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Being part of a gang meant something - a sense of identity & belonging’

‘I realised it was leading me down one path, and I knew I had to get out of it’

‘My epitaph would read “Seemed like a good idea at the time”'

’The world will judge us on the mistakes we make. All we can do, is keep taking the learning'

ABOUT THE GUEST

Gary came from a very respectable family, and enjoyed a secure, loving upbringing, so it was a stark surprise when he became embroiled in the destructive world of football violence within the UK, in the 1980’s.

As a dedicated, loving family man, this was a total contrast to who Gary really was, at his true core self.  Four months’ imprisonment in Durham jail, gave him the opportunity to reflect on his wayward antics, and start to emerge as the compassionate ‘gentle giant’ he naturally is.

ABOUT THE HOST

One thing that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – something he is totally aware of.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned the iconic ‘Think Different’ Apple commercial narrated by Steve Jobs in 1977:

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules.  You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do!”

Paul has a long and distinguished history of coaching & mentoring – particularly focusing on helping people make the transition from pain to purpose; a journey he has made himself, from the depths of a deep dark existence, to now living a life of happiness and prosperity.

Through this Mastering The Game Of Life podcast, and books he has been involved in – including being a best-selling co-author – Paul also helps others to get their own inspirational messages and stories out into the world; as well as offering support to many charitable organisations, in their development & fund-raising.
