On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by returning guest and sometime co-host Kristin Johnson to talk about quite a provocative title, but effectively boils down to the book and, more specifically, the TV series ‘Poldark’ - it may contain spoilers.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

If you look at the principles of drama, going back to Shakespeare, of conflict and the human heart in conflict with itself and the tragic flaw/hero from Greek drama, they’ve stood the test of time. The chief antagonist of the series is a tragic character, but is more complex than a cardboard cutout, moustache-twirling villain – those are boring, people aren’t really like that, the worst people in history have reasons for what they do. Most people are complex.
There’s a dilemma for me, and it’s being torn between two lovers. Ross, as much as he loved Demelza, never let go of Elizabeth. Moral dilemma might not be the right term for loving two people. Is it possible for us to love two people? Is it morally right? People have needs and wants and you may or may not act on them, what the series explores is what happens when you do. It’s realistic in the terms of the complications the love triangle between Ross, Demelza and Elizabeth presents for various characters and how they react to something like this. Can you love two people? Absolutely. Should you? That’s the question, and the series doesn’t necessarily answers that questions decisively.
Elizabeth befriends the woman that’s a romantic rival, Demelza, because despite their differences in social class those two women connect on a deep level. I think that, if Ross wasn’t in the picture, they would be good friends.
Ross is a guy that really thinks he can do it all, he’s really old school in that he wants to manage everything himself. But he learns to depend on Demelza, and trust her to manage his affairs. He puts her in a higher status and esteem as a community leader than she would have been before. Throughout the series she becomes that community leader. That shows a trust, not just in terms of the romantic sense, but the trust that you have to rely on people when life has dealt you a lot of blows.

BEST MOMENTS

‘240 years on from the American War of Independence here we are, a British and American chatting like equals'.

‘If you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with'.

‘The game of life is a simple one, but we human players are complex'.

‘We all love the romantic, attraction, sizzle, chemistry, bodice-ripper romance, but the best relationships really have that foundation of friendship, respect and commonality'.
