Paul is joined for the final part of a five-part series by Lisa Jayne, an Australian educator, mentor, speaker and writer to talk about the final part of her book, ‘The Emotionally Powerful Mother’. They discuss some of the techniques that can be used to love yourself rather than looking for love from others.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

When we become more emotionally aware and we’re more in tune with our emotions we can see that perhaps the one thing that lies at the source of our problems is the fact that we’ve separated from our truest, most empowered state. We’ve walked away from us in order to find love, feel secure, please others, out of obligation to feel OK about ourselves.
I’ve had the greatest success in feeling peace and joy in my life when I’m paying attention to how I feel, and when I see that it’s that part of me that’s looking for somebody to make me feel loved and secure I recognise it’s my inner child wanting to meet it’s own needs and I’m connected to her now where I invite that part of me to come and see me now and I will feel love for her and embrace her in my imagination. I’m often doing that while I’m interacting in my life.
If someone did something to hurt me or was really unjust, I learned that I really needed to diffuse the emotional charge before talking about it. I’d walk away and take some time, ring up a friend and talk to them about how I feel, go for a walk/run, write, validate you feelings, etc. Then I’m ready to have a look at why I’m feeling what I’m feeling and try to talk to someone about it.
Certain words need to be changed so there’s an awareness of intention behind them: “Worry” goes nowhere and is an endless cycle. “Concern” is a better word to use because it implies there’s something you need to look at, but there is a solution. I used the term “activated” rather than “triggered”, that’s like a gun that causes death, I’d much rather activate a part of myself so I can see where I’m talking back my power.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I realised at one point that it wasn’t me walking into the relationship with my first partner, it was the little girl in me that wanted to feel loved and secure.’

‘I give myself what I’m looking for from other people, if I can do that first I’m less likely to try to create it externally which often doesn’t end up well.’

‘When you actively love the essence of who you are it amplifies and you can feel your whole body respond. It’s a really wonderful feeling.’

‘It’s very easy to be self-critical and hard on ourselves. We are learning how to be in a relationship with ourselves and others in a really healthy and empowering way.’
