On this episode guest host Bob Conlin presents another of his relationship episodes, this time he talks about his relationships to spirit/God/the universe/the divine/whatever you want to call it. He thinks it’s an important conversation to have as we’re all spiritual beings having a human experience and whatever your relationship is to spirit, he feels and believes there’s a lot of power in nurturing and developing that relationship.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

There’s a distinction to be made around religion and spirituality. One can be religious and not really that spiritual, and one can be spiritual and not really that religious. For me it’s an important distinction to have because I grew up in a household of practising Catholics. When my Dad died I very much blamed the Catholic God for that and that really destroyed my relationship to spirit. Through me living my life and almost losing my life through horrible addiction to drugs and alcohol, I was reintroduced to spirit, not religion, and I was able to create my own concept of a higher power and God and I’m so grateful that I was able to do so.
I was at the bottom of my life, I had nowhere else to turn, there was nothing left. So, I surrendered to the possibility that there was something outside of myself to believe in and connect with, and it kind of felt ridiculous and I felt like a fool for believing it. My self-sufficiency and reliance on my own will power was all I ever knew. But, this prevented me from asking for help when I really needed it the most. It almost killed me.
I was stealing, lying, doing things I would never dream of doing now. I was totally sick and living a life my heart knew was wrong, but my head was constantly feeding me addiction and constantly taking me into further bad decisions and actions. In hindsight I can see that I wasn’t willing to start my healing journey and the pain and trauma was festering inside me and I was using drugs and alcohol to medicate that pain and distract myself from it. I was out of control, consumed by fear, unable to ask for help and I was just a few days away from a likely and unplanned lethal overdose. Speaking about this now terrifies me that I was that man at one time, who could go to those lengths of dread and despair.
Wherever you are in your relationship to spirit; know that it’s worth seeking. There is power in having a relationship to spirit. There is a sense of connection that comes with cultivating a relationship to spirit. Look at where there might be gaps and how you are nurturing that relationship. It doesn’t have to be hard, just allow it.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Wherever you’re at to something outside yourself, whatever you call it, this is a conversation about spirituality, not religion.’

‘The hardest lesson I had to learn was how to ask for help. I thought I’d be able to figure it out on my own one day, eventually, but that day never came. I’m so grateful for those that saw my pain and had an intervention for me. It’s been close to 15 years since I stopped abusing drugs and alcohol, but that man is still inside of me.’

‘My own relationship to spirit and spiritual practice could be mirrored by any relationship that I’ve had. At times I feel supported and basking in the glory of divine intervention, other times I feel alone, afraid and disconnected from the universe/spirit/God or whatever you want to call it..’

‘You’re never not connected, you’re always connected to spirit, you are spirit.’
