A Question of Awareness

In this episode of the Mastering Life Podcast, Paul chats with Derek Jackson, a qualified mental health nurse about the importance of awareness, especially for those who want to change the course of their lives for the better.; to help understand your purpose and how you will travel a path where there will be not just opportunities, but also challenges

Derek also shares how the nursing profession can be a vocation for those people who want to help others. Derek has a passion for caring for people and has spent 46 years doing so with the NHS.

Paul and Derek emphasise that being vulnerable and reaching out to someone, may it be formal or informal, is never a sign of weakness. One can never learn and do stuff on their own. It pays to be receptive of your loved one’s advice and be observant of other people. Another thing they highlight, is people should stop using labels on themselves, their aspirations, and their end goals. Discover the reason behind it when you tune-in.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Paul: So at that early age, were you aware that you were that type of person who got a very caring nature?

Derek: I don’t think it was evident. I just thought I was the sort of person who’d want to help people. I look back in my childhood, I look back in my school years, I think I had it in me, but it became more developed when I went through my nursing career… I came from a caring family… we were encouraged by [my parents] to help people even at the very basic level

Your vocation is your calling and Derek thinks that having a profession as a nurse is a vocation. People who pursue a nursing career have innate nature to care for other people
We have to move away from making labels and stigmatising. Labels create self-fulfilling prophecies and this can affect you negatively. Be careful of the words you put out there. It can prevent you from doing the self-actualisation process

Many people who could help you with your system and understanding of certain things, but it is your responsibility if you’ll adopt it or not
Stop saying you’re ‘broken’. Sometimes, we only need a little guidance from our loved ones so don’t be afraid to approach them. Acknowledge the ‘bumps’ you encounter along the way
According to Paul, life is as simple as ABC:

Awareness – Everything starts with awareness because we don’t know what we don’t know
Beliefs – Create a belief system according to your level of awareness. Our beliefs change the more we become aware of things.

Creativity – Challenge who you think you are. You have to rise above it by using difference creative patterns.

Don’t be afraid to reach out. If you want to find happiness and contentment, people could help you grow as an individual. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness.

BEST MOMENTS

“Labels occur not just in the professional field but also in life generally. That makes it for people difficult to find a way.”
“We don’t know what we don’t know.”

“People need to understand themselves. What do they really possess? They are not aware of it so we could make them aware of them so they can resolve their particular issues.”
“Life is a simple game, and it’s certainly not an exact science.”
“We are what we are. We’re shaped by different things… We have the capacity to change. We have the capacity to be different.”
“The purpose of life is to be happy and to contribute.”
“If anybody that is purposeless or struggling or in pain or suffering, reach out and do get support from somebody, either from a professional, from a mentor, or from whoever… There is no best, there is no worst. It’s what works for you.”

ABOUT THE HOST

Something that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – for which he is immensely proud.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned – in the Steve Jobs quote:

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
