Welcome to another episode of the HOW - Health, Others (Relationships), Wealth mini-series. Today, Paul and Trainer John (Batterby) discuss the benefits of understanding fats in our diets. John talks about the three functions of fats in our bodies and goes on to explain the roles of good fats vs bad fats and how this can affect our health, our diets and the functions of the body.

Fats provide energy and absorb certain nutrients to maintain your body temperature. You need to consume fat every day to support your functions. Good fats protect your heat whilst bad fats increase your risk of disease.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

The Three Functions of Fat in the body

Fats are a source of energy, your system turns to fats as a backup energy source when carbohydrates are not available. Fat is a concentrated source of energy, with one gram of fat containing nine calories, almost double the calories contained in carbs. Due to fats high-calorie count, we need to limit our intake to 20-35% calories from fats per day.

Vitamins A, D, E & K require fat for absorption. These are known as fat-soluble vitamins and cannot function without adequate fats in the body. If you don’t meet your daily fat intake or you’re on a diet that actively avoids fats the function of these vitamins may be affected as a result.

Insulation and temperature regulation. Fats cells stored in tissue insulate the body and help to regulate temperature. These are not often visible, however, if you’re overweight you may be able to see an abundance of tissue in certain areas.

ABOUT THE HOST

Something that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – for which he is immensely proud.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned – in the Steve Jobs quote:

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
