What happens when we run from ourselves? What are the consequences of running from ourselves, and how to stop this pattern?

As I reflected on this topic in my life, I also got to think of it in my previous position as clinical director of substance abuse centers; I had counselors that worked for me who kept running from themselves. Unfortunately, when you are running from yourself, knowingly or unknowingly, consciously or unconsciously, the people you work with can only go so far. In the same way, coaches, healers, or helpers also tend to run away from their feelings knowingly and unknowingly.

There is a ceiling there because you can't walk someone into a place you've never been as far as awareness goes.

Gifted people come to me for mentoring work because that's an expansion of coaching, and unlike therapy, it's a much more holistic overall life awareness.

Key points from this episode:

When we run from ourselves, we inadvertently stop and stunt our own growth, but we also hinder the growth of the people we're helping, whether it's our own children, our family members, or it's part of our work.

Running from ourselves indicates we fear asking, "who am I?" or thinking we are impostors.

Running from ourselves means being emotionally stunted, shut down, dysregulated, or experiencing analysis paralysis and the overthinking spiral.

Instead of running from ourselves, let's look within and see what needs to be rectified, what it is that's prickly, what it is that isn't serving us, and make choices that support our growth and welfare in whatever arena.

Dealing with pain is essential because it accumulates over time or, in some cases, is part of childhood or intergenerational trauma that is part of our DNA.

Intelligent people run from themselves more than others at first until they wake up. Remember that you, my friend, are a rock star. You're here on purpose, and it's time to stop running.
