Award-winning professional broadcast journalist and radio personality Kelsey Nicole Nelson is a living testimony that you can create waves in any industry with the power of being yourself. A career in media was not an easy path for a woman of color, and it took Kelsey to get comfortable in her authentic and unique voice to achieve breakthroughs after breakthroughs.

Key point covered in this episode:

✔️Kelsey always had a love for academics and athletics. Though an uncommon combination, she started young, understanding how these can help her build a bright career coming from a family with fewer opportunities. Education, to quote Oprah, was the key to unlocking the world and the passport to freedom.

✔️Why listening to others won't work. She first pursued a Psychology degree by listening to other people because "journalists don't make money." With classes not resonating with her and lacking the spark, she shifted to a journalism major, and later on, a degree in sports industry management allowed her to experience the best of both worlds and had a chance to combine the two.

✔️Let go of excess baggage. You can't control what others think or say about you, but what you can control is what you put out into the world. Kelsey knew early in life that it takes courage to lose the extra baggage of negative opinions of others to be able to move forward.

✔️God gave you that voice; use it — even if you might have to raise it a little to get your point across. Kelsey is a living testimony that you can create waves in any industry with the power of being yourself.

✔️Take those chances and opportunities and bet on yourself!

This life can be a journey of getting hundreds of NOs to land on that eventual YES meant for you. Whether it's a job, partner, project, or business, the right one will always find you. Remember, NO is not a statement of your value. Go out there, let your light shine, be the magnificent person you are, and stand in your authentic authority.

✔️What we do in life echoes in eternity. Kelsey is big on legacy, and she wears many hats as a media mentor and is active in many other nonprofit organizations. She does volunteer work for the Special Olympics, helping athletes with intellectual disabilities and helping young journalists push the message of supporting diversity and inclusion.

A trailblazer in sports media in the DMV, Kelsey Nicole Nelson continues to create her own lane. The award-winning professional broadcast journalist and radio personality have covered some of the top sporting events on a local, state, and national level for broadcast television and radio. Kelsey has covered some of the premier sporting events including the WNBA Finals, NBA Finals, and the Super Bowl interviewing the world’s top athletes.
