Introduction

·       Paul prays that both God and Jesus open up a way for them to come to the Thessalonians

·       Paul prays for their love (which he’s already praised) to ‘abound more and more

·       Paul prays for that abounding love SO THAT (εἰς τὸ) they be holy in the presence of God when Christ comes

This abounding love in this sentence leads to and gives rise to morality

1)      Paul’s objectives for His mission to them, vv. 1-2

a)      Progress

b)      Progress in what they’d received

2)      The specific behaviour that this objective entails, vv. 3-6

i)       Positively

·       that you become holy The Greek says: Τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ, ὁ ἁγιασμὸς ὑμῶν ‘for this is God’s will: your sanctification

·       that you keep away from sexual immorality

·       that each of you know how to possess his own body in holiness and

honor

ii.  Negatively

·       not in lustful passion

b)     Interpersonal – how you relate to other people, v. 6

c)      Summary: this all stems from God, vv. 7-8
